Confusion regarding reliability.

His less than 2 year old Deauville has not been up to scratch, and the service from the dealer hasn't been great either. He says he has bought his last Honda.

The Deauville's are made in Spain I believe...

Whether this is relevant or not I don't know...

reliable?

well my 08 with 7000ish miles has had front wheel bearings, rear esa unit and rear disc, would i change? yes for a newer one, best bike ive ever had,
1x650
3x1150
2x1200
new model 12 when it appears definatly

06 GSA from new. Broken down twice before reaching 10K. Common problems talked about at length on this site. Would I buy another one . . . . You bet I would, go for it

Had a 08 GS and with 300 miles on the clock it poured oil from the left pot. Bumw couldn't even be sure where it was coming from so had to replace the whole head. I let them keep it and swapped it for an 09 GSA which is great. If you dont mind a clunky gearbox and an engine that pops and farts then get one. The warranty and rescue service will allow you to sleep at night. ;)

Nothing is guaranteed in life, ever.
I decided against buying a new 1200 because of many things, reliability was the main reason though.
I do know that I could buy one tomorrow and never have a problem with it, ever. But once I had done the sums and the percentages and plenty of research I came up with what I feel to be a good compromise and I am happy.

I guess it all depends who you are as to whether you go for the 1200GS.

I do like them, just not enough.

So now what

Thanks for the indecision Att. Always enjoy your posts. You have ruled out the 1200 so what are you going to get? will you stick the Kwak or go elsewhere. I would just like to know.

Thanks for the kind words.....:eek::D
I got a nice, clean and tidy low mileage 1100GS.
It just ticked all the boxes for me, vastly more simplistic than the current 1200, in nearly every way. It can be fixed at the side of the road in a lot of instances, it does not require someone who understands the computer to plug it in and then diagnose what is wrong with it.:thumb2
I guess I am a bit of a technophobe:D:D:thumb

My first (06/2005) R12GS was a true nightmare. In 60000km/40000mls : multiple headlight bulbs, gear sensor, speed sensor, indicator switch left, indicator switch right, brake pump module, ring antenna, battery, corrosion, warped disks, all in all 3 break downs. Finally, when the servo assist went, I got fed up.

I was looking around for alternatives (Triumph, KTM) but when dealer gave me the best deal, I traded it in for a 12/2007 R12GS, hoping the teething problems would have been sorted out. I haven't regretted this swap, though the first 3 months' harvest was rear axle, warped disks (finally solutioned), and brake pump module (= 1 break down). Since then troublefree. Phew. I'm now at 36000km/24000miles.

Some problems, though not frequent in occurance, seem typical for the whole R12 range (FD, and right hand cylinder exhaust valve break down).
Then, BMW don't hurry to remedy well known problems (ring antenna and brake pump module took forever).
Furthermore quality levels go up and down as suppliers are switched frequently. The rear axle problem is typical only for 2007 models, for example. My 2005 model had WP suspension which wasn't too bad, but my 2007 was delivered with poor Showa's. And so on.

I'm sure the BMW quality issues frighten new customers, and lower resale values will make first time buyers think twice. And that's a shame, the bike doesn't deserve a bad reputation. It's a great ride, smile's on my face all the time (I know that's hard to believe). I love it, and haven't got a clue what bike to buy next.

Hi,
had my 05 GS12 from new and it now has 25K on the clock, no major failures and only a couple of minor issues. The "which gear selected" switch packed up, but £50 and two screws later was sorted. The other thing occaisionally the abs warning light comes on, once or twice a year, usually just before new pads are due in the rear (strange but true) anyhow turn it off turn it on and its all ok.
Been all over europe with two other GS friends several times and the bike just keeps on getting better.
THE BEST ALL ROUNDER :D

Have been riding 1200GS's since Sep 2004, and am now on my 3rd. Here's my experience:

- '54 GS: Minor running in gremlins. Fuel pump failure, needed recovering.
- '06 GSA: Minor running in gremlins. 100% reliable thereafter.
- '09 GSA: Minor running in gremlins. But at >3K miles now, 100% reliable and prospects looking good. Taking this one London to Beijing next year so had better be reliable !

All BMW serviced.

I have had 2 Fireblades in the past and not had a single problem with either of them.

I bought my GSA 'pre owned' and it has had the usual brake disc problem, a leaking front brake cylinder and engine cover corrosion................all remedied under warranty.

The dealer service from NOG has been excellent and I can't speak highly enough of them.

I wouldn't go back to a Fireblade again and I must say my GSA is just as much fun I think in 'real world' riding and it is rare I miss the tremendous power of the Blade.

However...........................were Honda ever to bring back the Africa Twin but with shaft drive (may be a long wait) I may go and take a look.

Until then I will just have to endure :augie the GSA.

Oooops sorry, forgot that the ring antenna was replaced prior to problem arising and I had to have the rear light sorted as the warning lamp kept coming on indicating a problem.........................Still happy though, but have just purchased an additional year warranty.................just in case.:)

ah you speak of the holy grail my friend:D:D more chance of getting struck by lightning than we have of honda getting their heads out of their collective asses:tears
