I have been trying to get my laptop to "see" my desktops 3G modem. It has "seen" it in the past, but due to reloading XP, I have lost the right (DNS, MAC or something) settings.
My wireless router uses the address 192.168.2.25
My desktop is set to
192.168.2.10 - IP address
255.255.255.0 - Subnet Mask
192.168.2.1 - default gateway
192.168.2.1 - DNS server addresses
My laptop is
192.168.2.20 - IP address
255.255.255.0 - Subnet Mask
192.168.2.1 - default gateway
192.168.2.1 - DNS server addresses
They are all using the same SSID
My 3G modem is given a variable IP address by vodafone each time I create the connection. It is set to Share its connection.
I can see the 2 computers in my network places.
When the connection used to work I could see the "shared" 3G modem in my laptops network places
I don't know why I have to have the values 192.168.2.1 as my default gateway, but the computers don't appear on the network unless I have something in there.
Switching off firewalls does not help (I have them set both to permit the range 192.168.2.1-192.168.2.255)
What is causing the problem?
DNS?? MAC?? Random act of Mr Gates??
