can the battery on a 1200 be disconnected and subsequently reconnected without triggering a fault code that needs a bmw dealer to reset, if one wanted to connect a gps directly for example?

alternatively, can you expect to plug a gps into the accessory socket and have the unit work reliably? i've read a lot on this forum about software glitches connecting this way.

Hi Cookie, I've got a 12GSA and I'm using a Garmin Quest, I've tinned the wires and poked them into the accessories socket near the head an all is well... I've done some 4-5,000 miles so far no worries.

Also using the main power output to power an intercom, again no problems.

is this the socket that bmw want silly money for the matching plug?

Yes - don't forget to do the "TPS reset" after reconnecting the battery.

With latest software this problem "seems" to have been fixed but best read http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60254&page=4&pp=40

Disconnecting the battery

I used to do this everytime I put the battery on charge but then bought a 'optimate' type of charger and left all in place knowing that the current is small. I never had to reset anything or go through any special drill - evrything worked OK after connecting up.

Resetting

"................manual, p112.........." Thank you for the information but as my manual is in French the pages don't coincide; in fact it says in mine (in French) that.... 'after reconnecting the battery, switch on, open the throttle fully once or twice' .........and that is all. I assume that is the same in UK ?

Yes, that is all you need to do.......no computer upsets, or visits to the dealer etc....... :thumb :)

I wired in my garmin straight to the battery last week and spent a very enjoyable day out on sunday with no problems.

Simply disconnected the battery and reconnected it and then did about 200miles with no problems.

Remember to always disconnect the negative (-) lead first and when you have finished always reconnect it last and you won't have any issues with shorts or flashes that can cause voltage spikes and damage to expensive ECU's.

straight across the battery is my preferred method of connection, so that's what i'll do.

thanks for all the replies :)

I believe that some time ago it was suggested that this is not a good idea because your cradle will then be permanently live when exposed to the weathers. :nenau
:D

works well on 3 of my other bikes. i include an accessible in line fuse which i mean to take out when the vehicle is left for a long time. in practise i rarely bother. i do put the plastic "shoe" on though & smear contacts with silicone grease.
