I hope he won't mind me asking here, but I'm thinking of buying this as my first GS

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=202227

Seems like a good price and although it's high mileage, everything I've read here suggests that shouldn't be a problem as GS's run forever if you look after them. Is there anything I need to consider on this age bike that might be an issue.

I'm reasonably mechanical just don't know much about GS's.

Can't afford much more than this and I'm not too fussed about the corrostion which doesn't really seem that bad for the age unless you know different.

Just wouldn't mind a head's up about anything this particular model might need checking.

Many thanks,

Justin.

Mines on 106000 and runs very well indeed, I would buy that bike in a second, its a good price:thumb2

take my advice my friend , buy buy buy ,,, this bike is owned by an enthusiast , and it is minted for that price ... as a comparison i'm new to the gs thing and in april i paid 3150 for a 2000 plate gs from motorworks with the same mileage .. my bike was rough as a stick and i spent 3 weeks stripping it and making it what i wanted .. i paid that price and i'm still happy with my steed , wot a bike .. the mileage is nothing , these things are indestructable .. check out this thread and see what i done to mine 2 weeks ago and it still runs minted ... if i had the cash i'd have it in a minute ... aqnd in the mandarin .. thats the fastest colour !! :thumb2

good luck ,,, you know it makes sense !!!!!:thumb2:thumb2

One of the great things about BM's is even when well used, they usually have plenty left. As said before, a ride is good for the immediate state of the gearbox and also the clutch. 1150's below £3k are rare and the 11/1150's are the best value GS's in ability per £.

What was it Rowan and Martin used to say??

I'd hit it for a dollar :thumb2

(doh.......age showing again, but Goldie Hawn :drool)

In my view, they get better as they get older. Go bite the man's arm off! And enjoy - GSes are pretty basic mechanically so all the usual servicing stuff's pretty easy. It must be. I can do most of it. :augie

Wow, they really are tough aren't they. Glad to read that yours is ok after the little mishap.

Fingers crossed this one will be mine.

Justin

I brought a 2003 1150GS on a whime a few months ago and it was the best thing i have ever done.
I had been a sportsbike man for years but with the onset of getting old and fat thought i would have a change, chatting to some friends in the pub they pointed me to this garage and 15mins later my Jap sports bike was left there and i came home on the GS.

Takes a bit of getting used to compared to the sports bike:-
Gearbox is clunky - this is apparently normal
Engine rattles and ticks - this is also normal although the ticking can be sorted with some valve adjustments.
Indicators - one on each side you get used to it

The ride is different but in a good way she will turn into a corner and power out nicely.

And its so comfortable i rode for about 2 hours that afternoon and it felt like i had just got out of an armchair.

Anyway hope you take the plunge

:clap

Thanks for all the advice, pending the usual I'll be picking up the new bike at the weekend.

There will be quite a few new questions coming I'm sure as I get used to it.

Cheers,

Justin.

mines done about the same mileage with no probs.
you will love it.
Just ride it and enjoy it !

Honda Blackbird to Honda Hornet 900 to R1100S BoxerCup Rep ... to GS.

5 years, never regretted it and never looked back!

Things seem to go wrong sometimes but don't they always ... had a clutch pump go kaput at less than 10,000 km, ABS / servo went kablooey at 68,000 km and then the petrol pump went the same way less than 2 tanks of petrol after the ABS / Servo!!!!!!!!! Still, I don't think I'd swap it, despite sometimes looking at what's available on the market :drool

Buy it and I am sure you will love it :thumb

The shift from model to model is much like the passing of the geological ages…

So are we approaching the Permian/Triassic boundary, in global transport terms?

Discuss…
