For a trip with about 1000 miles of road and 500-600 off-road. Off road most likely mostly rocky but mud possible.

Throughts?

Give the Anakee Wild a spin. Posted on here a couple of days ago - M&P selling a pair for £169.99 (GS sizes if that’s what you need).

From those two I like them both, TKC possibly has edge on road for me, Raid better off road

I’m guessing an HP2?

I had Anakee Wild on my GS airhead special - and was really impressed. They worked well on wet roads and rocky/gravelly tracks. I’d probably want something like a TKC80 for anything muddy though.

I’m not a fan of TKC80s in mud, they just fill up with mud very quickly. On sharp rocks they aren’t much good either as they’re quite soft with thin sidewalls

I’ve used them before on GS’s with good results, not great as you say in the mud, but the 21/17 wheel set doesn’t give me a lot of choice in off road tyres on a big bike

Should also say, I’m on tubeless rims.

Anyone tried Motoz? I had some on the 690 a while ago and seem to recall they are not great on the road.
TKC’s are pretty decent on the roads, and 2/3 of the trip is road. I’m hoping it won’t be muddy but you can never tell.

I have them on the 640 Adv. Not used them much but one thing I have noticed is they have a really stiff sidewall.
What do? TKC 80’s? Try fitting D908RR’s or similar to a wheel to see what a stiff sidewall is really like. I think the TKCs have a really insubstantial carcass for a tyre that’s part off-road use, particularly on a heavy bike

How about TKC 70 Rocks? they look interesting....
The Continental TKC 70 an On & Off-Road tyre and it sits right in the middle of the more off-road oriented TKC 80 Twinduro and the more road oriented ContiTrailAttack 2.
Light and agile handling, combined with superb high speed stability, rider comfort and reduced noise levels thanks to the small central rear band.
Excellent wet grip delivered from our unique Rain Grip compound in combination with wide sipes for good drainage along with a self cleaning profile.

I’ve got them on already- they are good road tyres and might handle a gravel track but that’s it.

No the Motoz jobs.

Hi Berin,
Have you got the TKC 70 Rocks ot the 70's...the reason is I'm seriously considering them as the next tyres. I would only use them on light off roading as the age of this old boy is the limiting factor!! I have Road 6's on at the moment, and they're good. Cheers AJ

The Rocks version. I like them, but don’t take them anywhere muddy.

it gets dirty

:)

I've had normal 70s and "Rocks" too on my GS and also 80ies.

The difference between the TKC 70 and the TKC 70 Rocks is just the rear. It gives you a fair amount of more traction on dry or gravely surfaces, but on muddy surfaces they are not great as the front won't be super grippy to be fair (I've ridden them in mud a fair bit).

Sadly I used my rocks mostly on asphalt (change of trip plan at last minute) on a vacation to the dolomites and ate the rear very quickly.

They are still very good on asphalt if you are pushing it (rear moves a bit when new of course) but nowhere near what TKC 80s can do off tarmac.

An often overlooked tyre is the Pirelli MT21. I have been told it was the de facto touring off road tyre before the TKC80.

I like the TKC80 and have used them on trips such as the OPs, however, if you are encountering mud, the MT21 gives me much more confidence than the TKC.

Both handle well on the road, there's not that much between them on that. If I change my tyres for this year's trip, I'll be going MT21s.

Following this with interest because I’m doing a trip across France and Spain to the far end of Morocco and back on my Basic later this year. It’s a fair distance and I’ve been pondering which tyres to fit. Currently thinking of Dunlop Trailmax Missions….
