Conti Trail Attack Tread Separation

liberally applying grease to the front tyre is a top idea, especially clever when demonstrating the area of tyre that could potentially cause a crash :D

BMW assist recovery to dealers today. Not a known problem with conti trail attack according to dealer Also same confirmed by local tyre dealer who was concerned that he has supplied a lot of these tyres. Lucky old me to be the one with the problem ! Also £251 for new pr3's fitted but thought I should go through a dealer investigation - may establish some goodwill for future problems, alert riders/ BMW to a potential safety issue, and can afford to be without the bike for now. will update outcome in due course.

Got the bike back with new pr3 trails fitted for £258. tyre has been sent to tyre dealer supplying Alan Jefferies who will send me a cheque according to their view on cause/ allowance for wear so no big suprises from what has been suggested. I heard in a roundabout way that there is a pile of conti trail attacks removed from bikes in the dealer garage. Hope I get on better with the pr3's and will definitely be changing tyres before they are 3/4 worn in future and wouldn't touch contis again with a a barge pole. If you have conti trail attack with more than a few k on them highly recommend a careful check over for this dangerous de lamination problem.

To be fair, over the years there have been similar such issues with various Michelins, Dunlops, & Metzelers to my certain knowledge, & possibly others. It does stress of course the need to check tyres regularly, & it does reflect well on a manufacturer if they deal with the issue promptly. Hope you like your PR3's.

I have absolutely no complaints with how Alan Jefferies and BMW recovery have dealt with this. Transported 70 miles both ways and new tyres fitted within 24 hours with regular updates at their initiative throughout. Usual story of good support around a make of bike that can be prone to issues - previous personal experience of both sides of this and remain a GS fan.

Your white tool tray looks like it could fall off the work stand

It didn't. As long as the Pan doesn't fall off I'm happy.

just to round up this thread I got a 75% refund on the tyre from continental via cambrian tyres and Alan Jeffries which I am happy with after 7k miles. FWIW they said it was a very rare occurrence on this tyre. lets hope so.

new PR3's seem very good.

Reasonable outcome for you and them.

The refund seems a fair amount - but a full refund from the brand would have been too expensive for them, and would have done their credibility a bit more good.

The Conti Road Attack 2 are the best tyre I have tried on the GS so far, and I intend to replace them with the same - fingers crossed I don't have any similar issues with them as you've had.

How has the Road Attack 2 behaved regarding the rear squaring off? I was not impressed with the Road Attack which squared off badly and quickly ruined the handling with at least 25% tread depth reamaining.

Road attack 2 has worn very well - front looks less than half worn with around 6k miles, and the rear on the single cam stood up very well to the same miles and is still going, not badly squared off at all.

The crazy thing is, I had a bad puncture on my twin cam during out tour and the local BMW dealers fitted a NEXT - even new it felt like riding on a squared off tyre compared to the Road Attack2 - very disappointing, after having a tyre that actually let the GS steer a little quicker, I was instantly reduced to the slower steering :(

Interesting thread ... Just had my Attack 2's fitted on Monday ... So I shall keep a a careful eye on them !
