Similar price, different shape, shoot good video

What do you prefer or why do you get the one you got instead of the other? :nenau

Got a couple of HD Hero's so that I could shoot 2 angles whilst riding.

Some of my footage here http://youtu.be/VS8zZZ9qwEg?hd=1

I'm selling one now here http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=267292 :augie

In my opinion the Contour is aimed at usually being helmet mounted where as the GoPro comes with all sorts of mounts and brackets as standard. GoPro are also now bringing out addons such as LCD screens, extended batteries etc.

go pro seems the most versatile and best supported.

don't underestimate the amount of CPU, disc space and time it takes to edit the output either. most of which is way too boring to watch oneself, let alone for others :P

Not speaking from personal experience (yet), but take a look at the VIO POV HD (Review here)

Major benefit as I see it is that you can set it in "Loop and Forward" mode so it is recording to a flash memory loop all the time, and when you hit the record button it includes the previous few minutes and keeps recording.

That way you hit the button and catch the action after you've been through the really nice set of twisties or seen your mate fall off :)

Are you calling me boring :rob

Any changes to the perspective on which is the better one. Very subjective word is "better" I know :blast

I like the idea of the timelapse and battery back packs for the gopro, but they seem to be solutions that the contour doesn't need, with it's lasers and phone type batteries. But does one of them do being mounted on the bike to take the videos better, as I don't fancy fafffing about with helmet / chest mounts :comfort

buy both as both do seperate things, which do not totally overlap... Also buy a Z1B as it will have offboard mic inputs... plus some EX1, EX3, and PDW700 with a set of lenses... and D5mk11 with a fig rig etc....

let's take a set back what are you filming and then you can see what will best cover your needs....

got 6 of each if you want to try one out... with grip

car or bike?

single fitted mount, moveable mount?

are you also using other kit, camera stills and camcorder?

field based filming or HQ based...?

On bike footage, probably bolted onto the handle bars so I can see where I went. Ability to not only hear wind noise would be good. Ease of use, both in setting up and switching on / off and seeing if the battery / card is about to expire before the exceptional bit of road.

I know both can be made waterproof, which seems a good idea, especially in the UK, but if it limits the ease of use, then that's not good IMO.

Used the gopro this past year... one mounted on the helmet and another ram mount on the crashbar. Just bought the LCD screen which should help things. I found the standard video quality sufficient for my needs with the batteries lasting for about an hour when filming in HD... or was it the memory card that kept filling up in just under an hour. Either way I thought it was a brilliant little camera though the files are very big when going to edit. As lo-q suggests, its worth considering your computing power at the same time as deciding on the camera purchase.

Gopro has better sound with less wind noise on account of the case it sits in. Guess they both take similar video quality. Quite happy with my HD Hero.

Won't the reduced wind noise be similar if you use the contourhd waterproof case? Sort of like the gopro's except they include it in the package you buy?

My plan would be to take the net book when I'm away and download the flash card to an external hard drive, and then edit it when back home.

if your comparing apples with apples there no difference in regards to quality if your shooting 1920x1080p

the files your creating are big, your better off to label 10 16Gb cards and download them as soon as you can. With the simple rule a captured file is not real till you've seen it run and backed it up to two places.

If your editing you also face other problems such as i (interlaced) or p (progressive)

HD 1920x1080i is actually 960x540 x2 fields upper and lower so it's a composite image on the other hand 1920x1080p are two seperate images at full res.

1280x720p is therefore as good a quality as 1920x1080i and it uses less storage and the camera's are not running flat out...

bored now been awake since 04.30 rigging....

I got a Go-Pro of Popps 2 Crimbo's ago and have used it on the bike , van and fornt of a paddle board and canoe with the mounts it came with ... :bounce1

Never tried it my helmet though .................. :eek
