I'm leaving my current employer who uses Lotus Notes. I'd like to take the 40Gb of email that I've built up over the years with me for reference.

I've searched the internet and found nothing obvious other than paying $299 for some software that may or may not work. Plus you need to have Lotus Notes on the machine to do the conversion - which would mean installing it on my current work laptop, which I won't have access to for much longer.

So anybody have any experience of converting a .nsf Lotus Notes file so that MS Outlook or Thurderbird can read it??

From what I remember, they are two very different systems, take a back up with you and take your time finding out..

Not much use to you I know..

I'm busy archiving everything at the moment, then I'm going to take the archive.nsf with me. Not quite sure what to do with it though.

Just reminds me quite how crap Lotus Notes really is :)

You may want to check your position under the Data Protection Act. You could be breaking the law and/or your employment contract by transferring your employer's data to another system.

Lotus Notes is the work of the devil and the bane of my life. We pay techie knobheads more money than we will ever make by using it to manage it. We could save millions by using gmail but the knobs in charge wear blinkers.

IT support are the lowest form of life in any company and should be treated as such instead of being pampered, blood sucking scum

Microsoft developed an add-on for Outlook 2002 and for Outlook 2003 for connection with IBM Lotus Notes release 5.x or 6.x servers. You can download the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for IBM Lotus Domino from their website.

Running Outlook you could then possibly back up your emails as a pst file. (re what Wessie said though, careful of data protection etc most companies would probably frown on you doing this).

I used the outlook connector to connect to our companies lotus notes server before they had sense and migrated to outlook.

Of course this assumes you have a version of outlook running on your machine.

I did consider this, but I've Notes 7 running which isn't compatible. Plus the laptop is setup so I can't install any software, so I've really got to do something with the nsf file.

The IT monkeys at work are (I hope) looking to fix exactly this problem as we switch from Lotus Notes to Outlook.... at last!

The email trail does not bother me (that's their problem, not mine) it's the diary entries and contacts lists I want to use a week on Monday.

God knows if they will ever manage and if so when.

PS Does your former employer know you are removing electronic information.... It doesn't bother me one jot but it might well vex them.

But wouldn't you all look like twats if they fecked off and left you to it for a month... or even a day :D

... and why anyone would want to use outlook is beyond me.

No, it doesn't bother me either.

Still no solution

Just going to take my archive file with me and hope for some inspiration!!
