Converting a Spada into a Cali t3 lookalike

No cookie they came from Reboot.

I'm after a complete exhaust system, four indicators and a screen if he still has any parts kicking about.

i'll try and remember to ask next time i see him, but i doubt he'll have exhaust. not the screen, but maybe the indicators.

Exhausts arrived today. Just needs the front end tidying and painting, a wiring harness and she's good to go

Every had one of those days?

I'm in the process of settling the guzzi in. Just putting some miles in and getting everything settled down. I put around 100 miles on it yesterday, came back with the charge light flickering, head bearings loose and a strange flat spot and rattle.

Head bearings were easy. The charge light turned out to be a brush in the alternator had come away from its connecting lead. The flat spot took hours to sort today - fecking and farting about with the ignition, re timing (Guzzi points are a nightmare to adjust), balancing the carbs. after three hours the last thing to be changed was the spark plugs and that was the problem. A plug had gone down! I haven't had this for years.

the bikes got its scruffy panels on so I don't have to worry about knocking things about.

so we're currently in a state of bolloxed :D

camchain was noisy so it all got pulled down. I was going to just replace the camchain but the teeth are well worn on the sprockets and it makes no sense to fit a new chain with worn sprockets..

That's what I'm doing Andres. Picked up a set of Joe carusos last night.

Ah, hence the photo :blast

In my defence it didn't display on my phone this morning :D

FWIW I've had gears on three of my Guzzis and all were faultless; they make a nice, just perceptible, whiny noise too :)

All done!

Can't believe the difference it makes. A big plus is the gears are very quiet. Considering they're straight cut I can't here a sound out of then when riding and there's just a hint of a noise at tickover when the engines hot. Result

The last thing I need is another bloody airhead :D

I'm enjoying my Guzzi too much to part with it.

Must admit, after the last test ride on a guzzi mk2 le man,
There is a space in the man cave,
Unfortunately there is a similar space in my wallet,
Looking for my winter project,so we will see, late Tonti Cali is fave at the mo
But would consider a pile of bits:augie

I've been meaning to get my Guzzi on the dyno for a while to make sure the jettings about right.

Riding it around it felt fine at the top end but a little weak around 3k

It was originally fitted with 135 main jets but I'd swapped the exhausts out that it came with to a pair of Armour stainless. The bikes covered 42k and has the standard air box and engine internals.

So

off to the Dyno today. Thought I'd try a different dyno this time and I'm really pleased I did. its run by a couple of Brothers - proper old school mechanics who tune and build a few bikes for TT racers.

First task is to tie it all down. Next task was to drill a couple of holes through the baffles in my new exhaust system to get the sniffer in there.

Sam putting it through its paces

The Verdict

what do you thing a 1981 950cc Guzzi spada produces at the back wheel?

Well! The jets were too big for a start. Bikes tend to feel better on the road when they're too rich - mine felt great at the top end but only produced 39.5 BHP

We dropped the main jets down to 125 and ran it again - the mixture was much better and the bike produced 43.5 Bhp - Sams suggestion is that I need to go to 120 but unfortunately we didn't have any 120 jets to give it a go.

10 sizes on the main jet was worth 1.5 on the air/fuel ratio. The rpm plot was a waste of time, wasn't worth printing, the points were causing loads of spikes and anomalies at higher rpm so Ive ordered a dyna ignition to tame the sparks.

All in all a good couple of hours to get the bike bottomed out and moving in the right direction.

A couple of great guys who it transpired are ex Laverda riders and just happen to look after my old Jota that I sold years ago.
The work shop was full of racing Ducatis and Fireblades this morning. Worth the visit just to see those
If You are looking for a Dyno or conventional bike work in the East Midlands I can''t rate these guys highly enough - total cost to sort the Guzzi £50.

So a bit more tinkering today. Fitted a dyna III electronic ignition system and the 120 main jets and it's all starting to get a bit good :thumb
