Converting Ordnance survey references

I'm new to GPS, so this might be common knowledge to the experianced user -

There's an ordnance survey website which converts OS co-ordinates to latitude & longitude -

When I encounter an OS reference I select British National Grid in Mapsource prefs and add two zeros after each 3 digit number and it gets me fairly near.
