Converting std R80 to off road (GS) spec

Force.. me... I'd never use brute force.. :D

I'll see how the plus gas works.. I might even try the blow torch again (bit of heat)... And then if all alse fails.. the hacksaw will have to come out!

Does anyone know what size spacer the R90/6 uses on the front spindle?

Don't use a Hacksaw, you may damage the threads before the nuts split..
A chisel is the preferred way of getting the bastards off, and it does feel good when the feckers split :thumb2

Would you be parting with any of the std. R80 bits that you'll have left over?

Also agree with the chisel on the nuts, be firm when you hit them and you might not need to go all the way through, just enough to 'stretch' the alloy.

James,

The spacer just gives the alignment of the disk to the caliper. The wheel spindle takes up the slack in the bearings. With the clamps undone the wheel nut has to be torqued to 44 Nm.

Your front wheel had new bearings just over a year ago. The were replaced and shimmed by Mick Barr so should be fine.

New "gs" trottle cables (which oddly are way to long).

I bought some new throttle cables from Lincolnshire which alegedly fit my bike  Wrong length too and the same length which they shouldn't be. Picture of the part number below, and they have the dellorto rubber sleeves to try and reduce the kinking of them. PM me if you need more info / interested.

pikeydave - Would you be parting with any of the std. R80 bits that you'll have left over?

Not sure at the moment.. If there is something particular you are looking for I might be tempted to part with it!

Proff - Don't use a Hacksaw, you may damage the threads before the nuts split..

I'll give it a couple of days - let the plus gas soak in... And then if no movement I'll be investing a nice new sharp chisel!

Thanks for the offer John.. But after a quick call they sorted out some slightly shorter ones.. strangly enough from a std R80RT.. odd.

Rob Farmer - The spacer just gives the alignment of the disk to the caliper. The wheel spindle takes up the slack in the bearings. With the clamps undone the wheel nut has to be torqued to 44 Nm.

Okay.. stupid question (please dont all laugh at once) - should the spindle pass cleanly though the l/h fork leg? Mine will only go though just far enough for the washer and nut to go on (even if the wheel isn't fitted)!

:D James

bigY, don't no if you remember my posts on this when i did up the 90s last year but..... i had to replace one of the fork lower legs. The replacment i had looked new to me and in a MBW box too! got all the Gen from Rob and Proff and set to, same problem you seem to be having. I modded the spacer to fit but i was not happy, seems as the new leg had a little twist in it. New S/H leg from Motoworks/bins don't remember which, plus new spacer and all was well.
PS: all seemed ok with the old leg it just had the spindle casting broken:augie

I've just come across these pictures on my hard drive. The bike was for sale on Ebay a few months back. Looks very well done. Early heavy flywheel gearbox but later timing case so single timing chain and bean can ignition. Anybody know what the forks are?

The pictures were taken from Ebay.

That bike was at the Dragon Rally at the weekend.I didn't get a good look at it because I was fooking freezing cold but I am sure it was the same one.

Its a really lovely bike isn't it.
Talking to Mark (Lurcher) on the phone the other day and told him we wanted a Lurchers Project Bike Thread started ......... so come on Mark :)
I'll volunteer to be the official photographer if someone still can't get the hang of photobucket :augie :D

Where's this weeks gripping installment???????????

Swesty - Where's this weeks gripping installment???????????

"Gripping installment"... blimey.. okay.. well.. er.. I've been a bit lazy..." "

I did do a few things.. But forgot to take my camera with me to the workshop:

Newtered my exhuast (cut the nuts off).. And fitted the early R80 front pipes.
Made up two link pipes to connect these to the triumph bonnie silencers (decided not to sweep the pipes up quite so high as it meant splaying them out really wide to avoid the shocks)... I'm not sure I like them where they are.. But they will do until I can find some short stubby silencers to replace the bonnie ones.

Fitted a different front wheel spindle & spacer.. But this didn't solve the wobble.. Guessing bearings or shimming is the culprit in the end.. :( I'm going to leave this little job to my friendly local bike shop (when they MOT her).

After this..(even with the wobble) I couldn't resist dragging her outside and firing her up.. The exhausts sound just right.. not quite, not noisy.. just nice!

I gave her a quick run around the farm yard.. gears work, no nasty noises... even the crappy ATE front caliper isn't soo bad (even locked the wheel stopping from 25mph :D).

Anyway.. I'll hopefully be doing some more bits and bobs saturday and this time I'll remember the camera!

:D

and she's superb off road

Instead of trying to track down expensive hard to get parts why not just fit a twin shock swinging arm and subframe. You can then buy a cheap ex police wire rear wheel You will then have a large range of cheap readily available bevel boxes to choose from.

Keep the standard downpipes and look for alternative small silencers - Harley slip on's or similar.

Psycomotos bike looks great with it's twin shock backend.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, Camille is a fantastic off roader, yes i know its what she was built to do but i've races pogo's in enduro's in the past and on a dry event i'd have no issues racing her. The travel on the suspension is massive, she soakes up rough stuff better than any standard GSand will go at a pace which will keep up with a modern pogo.
As i've a jig to make a swing arm and a spare 100mm longer drive shaft plus a set of KTM sx forks i'm now thinking of building a stripped R100 offroader, something i don't mind crashing and boggin on the odd event:thumb So Proff if you any old r100/80 knocking around looking for a loving home at the right price, give me a call:D

project update

I had another saturday in the workshop...

Exhaust cans are fitted, Electrics have all been sorted out and I've reset the carbs and got her ticking away sweetly.

Piccies:

The exhausts from the side.. Not sure about the bonnie silencers yet.. little short stubby ones might look better... what do you guys think?

And from the back:

It's getting a little crowded in there:
