Converting std R80 to off road (GS) spec

Cheers guys!

I think the old school dirt bike look with the bonnie silencers is growing on me... :D

As for the  "brake"... its not all that bad... really.. honestly.. okay.. its not great.. I'll just have to wear nappies until I can pick up some later forks and caliper.. :D

Also I think Rob's right.. I'm going to get some 15/20 degree bends made up to replace the straight connector pipes.. See if the extra kick on the bonnie pipes looks better! Although I think that will mean cutting the old exhaust/footrest mounts off completely.. hey ho. its not she will ever get put back to standard :D

Is it possible to cut the end pipes down to about two inches? I reccon that would make them look better.

Re the front brake: Isn't it possible to get the matching right hand leg to make it a twin disk? I'm sure I've seen that leg type as twins. :nenau You'll be needing a fork brace too won't you?

Val.

That front end came from my R90/6 and to be honest the front brake was never that bad. On the picture showing the disk there's a definite pressure line on the inside and outside parts of the disk. Something's not lining up properly.

Yup... there is definatly something "not right" with the front end... I still havn't fixed the "wobble".. I've tried a couple of spindles and spacers but to no avail.. I'm guessing it has to be either the bearings or that they need reshimming... both tasks I'm not keen to do myself so I think I'll be dropping her off at my local bike shop for these to be done and of course an MOT.

Not sure about cutting the pipes as it might damage the chrome... hmmm... I'll see how they look once I've "kicked" them up a little more.

Brace.. yup definatly.. I've not tracked one down yet.. As for twin ATE front ends.. I'm not sure if the wheel has the mountings for another disk... But I'll take a look.. South coast boxers have got a r/h leg, caliper and disk for 50 quid.. so it could be a quick fix!

:D James

I'll gladly buy that front end back off you for what you paid me for it. Same for the wheel.

Well done at least your bike is nearly on the road. BTW I had a sinle disc on my 90/6 and once set up it worked well To set it up properly it would be better to start with new pads, makes the whole exercise much easier.

lol... Didn't mean that there was anything wrong with the parts.. more likely its the stupidity of mechanic who's putting it together ;) All the parts I had from you have worked out perfectly! Without your help and "secret stash" project GS wouldn't have got started!

As for the brake.. It's not that bad.. compared to modern stuff its basic.. But it works and I can live with it until I come accross a later front end or t/disk conversion... I'll probably change the pads out before the bike goes for its MOT..

does anyone know where I can get a fork brace from... which will fit over the 21" front wheel?

:D James

Kenny - Fork brace !!! Are you taking the micky

Nurse, where's me medication ?

Calm down dear... you'll give yourself a funny turn :D

I take it that I have either.. a) asked a stupid question.. or b) A really dumb *&*e one?

If the answer is.. that they dont exist.. well.. guess I'll can make one.. its not the end of the world.. I have lathe, drill and time.. Cant be that hard.. can it?

This thread inspired me to do much the same to my bike, but due to a change in circumstances it is now in the For sale and wanted section if anyone following this would like their own.:aidan

Hiya, all

I am following this rebuild thread, great stuff.

Is there a thread where we can learn more the Syco's bike? It's interesting too.

Cheers

Little update:

Other than the insurance woes (and an offer from a freind to "take her off my hands" I have completed a few more jobs on the old girl:

Front wheel wobble was the bearings in the end.. I decided to have a crack at this myself and it was a peice of cake! Little bit of heat on the hub and hey presto! 20 quids worth of new bearings and a few shims later and no play!

Sorted a rear brake light switch, with the new pipes and the routing of the brake arm the original one didn't want to work! So she now has a honda item (from a s****dream).

Basically she's finished.. the carbs keep flooding/overflowing which I'm going to sort at the weekend.. Also I think I'll need to play with the jetting a bit to compensate for the pipes.

I've got a set of genuine engine bars (ebay 15 quid) and a little nose fairing to fit at somepoint..

MOT next week (fingers crossed)

final update - an your thoughts on value?

Well.. I think she is finished..

Fitted the wing mirrors, orginal GS handgaurds and some engine bars.
Fitted some baffles into the bonnie silencers (mot guy said "no").
Fitted a vapor dash system... really was a peice of piss to fit!

Everything works as it should and she's light and fun to ride.. I'm tied up with work for he next week of so and then I'm buggering off for a little tour of devon and cornwall with a friend (sad to say I'll be on my Cagiva for that.. or maybe the zed 1000)...

Once I'm back she will go back to the MOT station... :D

Finally... I have to admit that although I have really enjoyed building her and she is a great little bike! exactly what I expected.. I have decided that I really really want is an R100 paris dakar.. So I'm going to sell the R80 to get the fund started..

Not wanting to suffer the wrath of the moderators.. this isn't a sales pitch.. But I would be interested in peoples thoughts as the the value of the old girl?
