I need some advice [ computer dinosaur ] from those in the know .

I have some photo stories and bike videos which I made using WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER , they are all wmv files .
I tried to copy them onto DVD , but that didn't because they need to be converted to another format .
I have just got a new home pc [ DELL ] , which came with VISTA HOME PREMIUM and a DVD +-rw thingy that plays all and enables you to copy/ burn DVD's .
The new version of WMM and W DVD player that comes with Vista Home Premium apparently converts WMV files into M-Peg ones whislt in the recording process , thus enabling you to burn to DVD using the Windows DVD thingy , and these DVD's can then be played on the TV .
I tried this last night with one of my existing files [ WMV] , by importing it into WMM and saving it , then used W dvd BURNER - when I played it on the TV ,the picture was there , but no sound .

Now this either means that :
Any new photo stories I make will be fine , but importing current ones won't work because it won't change them into M Peg format .
If so , any advice in how to change the current ones [ tight wad , me no wanna spend any loot ]

Thanks
Steve

A big thankyou

Last night I phoned Andy [having never met him or spoken to him before ] , to ask for his help installing the Nero 7 disc he kindly sent to me , as I am a complete numpty when it comes to computers .
With his guidance and expertise , I tried to install it , but alas , Windows Vista doesn't like it , and doesn't even like uninstalling it either !!
Eventually , after somehow disconnecting Andy from the call ..........THREE TIMES [ ????? - not on purpose ] , I realised that it just wasn't going to work , and even the uninstall was not happening .........so a system restore finally removed it .
I'd just like to thank Andy for his perserverance and persistance in sticking to the task in hand , ie , trying to guide an idiot through what is probably to most people a simple task .
We spent some time [ betwix getting cut off on numerous occasions due to my dodgy phone ] talking bikes , in particular the GS , which was nice .

Andy ,
When I eventually get another bike , I'll be nipping down your way to buy you a pint , as I owe you .
If you are ever in the Cotswolds , don't hesitate to give me a call .

Thanks once again , and ride safe .

Steve

I have to use Nero at work for making videos (not THOSE vids before anyone starts). I've used it on XP, can't even get it to start on Vesta.

Even on XP - it's typical Doze rubbish performance - sometimes it works, others not - fails at random intervals. Keep trying and trying the same process and eventually I get there.

If I really need something done, I just take it home and do it on the Mac, first time, no probs.

Steve,

I'm really sorry it didn't work for you. As I said, I've had absolutely no problems running it with XP.

It was, however, a real pleasure to have a chat and I look forward to that pint one day.:beerjug:

Andy

PS Fantastic photos - thanks.

I may be speaking out of turn here, but Nero 6 with Nerovision seems a lot better than Nero 7, which I uninstalled on my XP system as a result. Nero 7 seems to have a load of bloatware which interferes with recoding.

Andy,

Glad you liked the photos , these days I can't go anywhere without the camera ...or as SWMBO says ." that bloody camera is welded to your hand !! "

Hearing your tales of riding all over Europe just made me wanna get back on two wheels even more , that day can't come soon enough .

My door is always open and the kettle will be on .

Twist the throttle in a few corners for me next time you are out on the bike .
