I need a new drill, my twenty year old Makita has finally died. I don't use a drill very often, and so don't need anything too "mega professional" just something for around the house type jobs.

Any recommendations for a decent drill ?

Cheers.

I have a Bosch which is very good, but it was nearly £100 a few years ago, try Screwfix they often have good deals :thumb

A Makita that old is probably a 7.2v or 9.6v one with a 10mm chuck maybe even without hammer action.

Any new 12v upwards battery drill with hammer action and 13mm chuck will suit all your needs from your description......
It`ll feel such an improvement that you`ll be looking for excuses to use it :D

I wouldn`t even bother with the 'big names' in your case....just a store`s home brand should be fine.

Check the supermarkets, i cant remember which one, but one of the stores were selling Bosh 24v cordless with hammer and screwdriver funtion, all for about 60 quid they should be about 170 quid, great bit of kit i bought one a couple of years ago and its great.

Fleabay has a few online stores that sell De Walt and Makita at good prices.

Gotta disagree with you, Tarka. A fifty quid cheap drill is just that - a fifty quid cheap drill. I can't see Johnnie coming on here in 20 years and saying 'my cheap Skil Base drill has just died'... more like in a year or two.

This is obviously the cue for loads of people to come on here a say 'my cheap drill lasted 72 years' :mmmm

FIFTY QUID............?

I wasn`t contemplating spending THAT much :P :P

David,I know exactly what you`re saying, but from Johnnie Comet`s post it seems that the drill is hardly ever going to get used......just be sat there in it`s box for the odd occasion it may be needed........

Rather like my Quest,really. :D

That's dead right......nothing too fancy, just a straight foreward DIY drill.

Thanks for the speedy replies gents...... :)

Try Aldi... I bought a 24v cordless several months ago for £25. It's has all the usual facilities, was made in Germany (assembled?) and comes with a 3-year prepaid return to base guarantee.
I've been using it quite a lot and it's a powerful, well-built bit of kit, highly recommended.... if you can find one!

Go to a Robert Dyas. They have mega deals on currently. Nice Bosch and B&D stuff - 18-24v - givvin 'em away almost. Dunno how they do it, but there you are.

This looks just the ticket at £25......

I'd forgotten about Robert Dyas. You're right, last time I was in there they had some cracking deals on big brand drills. Can't remember what was on at the time, but I remember thinking 'ooo that's a good deal!'

Thanks again gents..... :thumb
