Just picked up on this excellent thread.

Good advice all round. I'm a big user of the rear brake on tigt corners too. Picked up the habit during my Varadero years. Really helped get the beast round tight stuff.

Hi All,

........Normally I'd just ride up to those at the appropriate speed, flop the bike on its side, smoothly round the corner then lift it back up again.
But on the GS what happens is that I approach them at the appropriate speed, start to get the fear that this'll never work, slow down some more, then limp dangerously round the corner on a jerky throttle, barely leant over at all......

I have found the biggest issue with this type of low speed corner is the rather jerky off idle throttle response on the 1200GS and it seems that it is the same on your 800. If you are not confident that you can feed the power in smoothly, then you are not confident in dropping the bike into the corner, as you are not sure about picking it up smoothly on the throttle as you exit.

The problem is not helped by the free play in the throttle cable when set up according to the service recommendations. Eliminating the free play with the adjuster at the lever gives a much nicer pick up and much more confidence. I didn't try the higher idle trick, but that could work too.

Total Control by Lee Parks is an excellent book with drills for cornering, braking and throttle control that are relevant to this aspect of riding.
