I am doing a bit of fettling over Christmas and the front headlight guard is very badly faded and has some light corrosion. Does anyone know what the correct colour red the paint should be. Mine is a 89 White and Red R100GS PD.

Cheers Bill

My local Auto parts store has the Duplicolour electronic equipment to match paint, and came up with a perfect match for the red on my F650 - which he had in stock as Honda Milano Red.
If he hadnt had it in stock he could have mixed it and stuck a label on the can saying BMW Flame red, or whatever.
Cost around five quid a can, and was a solid colour which buffed up perfectly after a week or so to harden.
Duplicolour sell a clear overcoat for metallic paint at around the same price, but I have never found a one pack clear overcoat which was either hard enough or didnt yellow, despite the claims on the can.
But at the prices RS charges he might have found one!

Will drop into my local motor factors and see what they can do, want to try and get it done this week. Thanks for the help apparently mine is marakesh red paint scheme.

Thanks for the help any other pointers appreciated

RS paints list the Marakesh red as a metallic, which requires a clear top coat, but BM bikes dont .
There is a possible explanation.
Some quality reds including Honda reds have around 1/2% of expensive Mica, or pearl , which is added to give a little life to the red, and this makes them hard to for auto paint suppliers to match, as they try to use metallic or cheap mica instead of the uber expensive stuff, which reflects the light differently and is simply impossible to substitute.
The paints with 1/2 % good mica dont usually need a clear top coat.
The expensive mica usually goes into paint applied to Aluminium composite cladding fixed to building facades, and this paint is required to have a warranty for 20 years against discoloration, without any polish or cleaning. Good, but expensive, around $30/M2 paint only, or $600- per liter. So Auto paint guys dont want to know, and just claim they cant get the code!
When I repainted my Honda VFR I was in the cladding business, and of necessity we had our own paint company, run buy an expert and we were able to do what no one else could do and match a Honda Pearl - I have a feeling Marakesh red might be just as hard to match , unless of course you are repainting the whole bike and a exact match is not required.

My pd still has its original Marrakech red. The finish is quite crude and is literally just sprayed over the white and doesn't even look lacquered.
Red is obviously notorious for fading so I think your right about it being hard to match.

Having looked for the right colour I have decided to wait to spray the headlight surround and get it all done at the same time and just give it a good polish (although it still doesn't look great). Thanks for the advice at least I now know the right colour when I get all the bodywork done. Thanks everyone Bill
