Hi Guys, I have been looking for the correct oil for my 1250, a 5w-40 JASO MA2.
I can only find Castrol in 1lt containers and Westway oil. The Westway seems too cheap to be good and buying 4 x 1ltr Castrol containers expensive.
There is 4ltr containers on Ebay but £24 carriage!
Starting to think BMW might be a cheaper option.
Anyone found a good deal?

Cheers, Pete

I put "5-40 JASO MA2" into Google and found loads.

I have used Westway oils on loads of V- twins (not boxers) for years. Great oil and it conforms to the oil regulations - what more do you want ?

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm very tempted to go for the Westway oil but I can't help thinking "you get what you pay for". OR are we paying double for a name like Castrol?
The Westway oil has the correct spec, but who regulates these to ensure what is stated as a spec is what you actually get?

Found this on the Triumph forum, these guys were having the same conversation:

Hi all.....

This is Westway Lubricants here based in Wombourne UK.

Just want to leave this little statement here....

We NEVER have or NEVER will sell oils that have been formulated using recycled oils. I'ts a false economy....the process of trying to regenerate used oil into new oil costs more than simply using virgin base oils.
You can tell our oils are new by the light colour they are when pouring them, they also do not smell like a used engine oil.

No matter how much you process a used oil it will always be dark, it can't be "filtered" out as this darkness is attributed to the oxidation caused by the combustion process. We are a real British company using only Virgin base oils and additives sourced here in the UK.

The reason why our products are priced so competitively is because we have much lower operating costs to the big brands.
We have no sales reps on the roads, we don't sponsor race teams, we don't spend huge amounts on advertising and marketing, we don't have a chain of distributors all adding their own markup, we simply sell good quality oil at the best prices we can direct to the customer/end user.

We are registered here in the UK and pay UK VAT & Tax....Simples!!

There you go... just thought i'd put this out there as there are a lot of people asking the question.

Thanks guys and if you have purchased from us I thank you very much for your support.

(Moderators please feel free to reach out to us if this post requires editing or goes against your rules, this is not a post to push our wares, it's simply to dispel some inaccurate information here on your site)

The above confirms what I was thinking about paying over the odds for a brand name.

It’s totally up to you and it’s your 20 grand bike, but there are several possible suppliers suggested in this thread where you can get a known brand high quality oil for a decent price

I’d be choosing one of them, save some money and have peace of mind too

Mine’s getting Motul oils, correct NGK spark plugs at half dealer price from Amazon, genuine air and oil filters from BMW and all new crush washers and O ring which cost pennies

You’ll still be saving a fortune compared to dealer servicing

Motul 7100 4T 5W-40 Motorcycle Engine Oil Fully Synth 5W40 4 Litres 4L @ £40-45

Is what I have used in the past, meets spec and reasonably priced.
Of course plenty of other oils out there.
Will look out for Westway next time I need some oil.

MOTUL 7100 4T 5W40
I had great experience with this oil on many of my previous bikes and it's correct specification for GS.

Can't argue with the logic, it's an expensive bike to be saving £20 on and having a little niggle at the back of my mind that the oil is not up to the job.
I followed the link and ordered the Motul oil.
Thank you all for the guidance.

Cheers, Pete

Halfords do 5 litre bottles of this stuff for £36.00 and probably a bit cheaper with a trade card. No mention of which JASO spec it meets though. https://www.halfords.com/motoring/m...-oil-fully-synthetic-5w/40---5ltr-724328.html
The JASO specification is for motorcycle oils where the clutch runs in the oil (watercooled boxers, across-the-frame K-series, most Japanese and modern Triumph). It's your reassurance that the clutch won't slip when giving the bike a handful of throttle. How Halfords describe it as a motorcycle oil without a JASO specification is something I don't suppose they'll explain to us.

First time round I bought oil from the dealer - and got Elf oil ........ and paid over €20 per litre for the pleasure

So this time I bought the same Elf oil from Germany for € 6.00 per litre !

It maybe gives some perspective to the discussion ........
