Correct spec oil

First time round I bought oil from the dealer - and got Elf oil ........ and paid over €20 per litre for the pleasure

So this time I bought the same Elf oil from Germany for € 6.00 per litre !

It maybe gives some perspective to the discussion ........

Hey digby, just noticed you’re in the Auvergne, so am I, whereabouts are you?

Been out for a blast on the bike today ‘cos I had some petrol that needed burning and we’re limited to a 10 km radius as from Saturday :blast

I almost can’t believe the difference a different brand of oil has made!

Took out Castrol Power 1 Racing and put in Motul 7100, the engine is quieter, feels smoother and the gearbox is much better

Ok, it’s still a GS but it now sounds less like a set of pétanque balls in a cement mixer :)

Only problem is it’s not going to help me ride any slower , it sounds and feels a lot less like it’s going to grenade when you thrash it:rolleyes:

Happy bunny here and now a Motul fan boy :thumb2

New oil will always feel better than old oil whatever make of oil it is.
I was also out for a ride yesterday, went to Collonge-la-Rouge, just south of Brive in the Correze.
Not riding today due to the 10km rule, but I suspect that, as with everything, it will not be policed and by next weekend we will be out and about again.

That’s why I was so surprised, normally an oil change isn’t particularly noticeable, this one is a bit more than placebo effect :nod

Collonge-la-Rouge is nice, been around that area lots, I’ve been whizzing around France for 20 odd years now on long weekends and holidays

Hope you’re right about the lockdown, not too many cops in our region but when there’s a chance to make a few euros they tend to pop up more

Why take chances with cheap oil on a high performance motor ? MOTUL or Liqui Moly or the BMW Oil made by Shell is all I would put in...If you think it is too expensive eat less that saves money and good for your health too :thumb

Having a 2013 LC with a very clunky gearbox, I'm interested. I see there are several weights of Motul 7100. Which one did you use?

Merci d'avance...:thumb2

De rien ;)

I stuck with the 5W40 as specified in the manual, it meets all of the required specs for wet clutch JASO MA2, API etc

Got it here for 9.95 euros a liter, good fast service, free delivery over 50 euros :thumb2

Castrol Power 1 Racing was the BMW recommended oil for years before they moved to Shell. Any oil that meets the spec will do

"Citroen prefer Total." When I owned a few Citroens years ago, they dealers were adamant that Total oils were the only oils good enough to use - designed with Citroens in mind, blah blah blah. Then that deal obviously expired and all of a sudden other oils were good enough after all! :D

Personally, I would be very careful where I would by my oil / plugs for my bike, there is always a chance that you are buying counterfeit products. I know we all want to save the pennies but sometimes even saving on the labour is enough, happy diy servicing.

This is my experience with the 7100v. Have used it for years and always recommend it.

Good point,
I purchased some mach 5 razors blades at half price via amazon 9 months a go - 20 pack. I am convinced they are counterfeit as i found on older one in the draw the other day used that - Night and day.

On my previous bikes (all chain drive), Motul 7100 gave impressive results. Quiter engine and much smoother shifting.
Now, my new GS is on 3 years warranty and it had its first service already. They put "BMW" oil that is probably made of gold chunks as it costs more then a gold and sounds like those gold chunks are rattling inside the engine. I was already tempted to change the oil myself to Motul 7100.
The bike still has to do 2 of annual services at BMW but when it comes to annual service on the end of its 3rd year of life, it is not going back to BMW. It is going to my friend's Suzuki dealership (I have no way to properly dispose used fluids) and it is getting Motul 7100. All police BMW's in the town go to his dealership for all the work. He is just honest dealership with very honest prices.

Maybe if you ask your dealer they’ll put Motul in at the service? Even if you supply it yourself
I can bet they wouldn't accept it. They charged me 120-ish euros for their oil only at first service, plus the rest for the service. I can get Motul 7100 for less then a half of that.
Dealers make more money on the services then they make on sale of new and used vehicles together.
I worked at the dealer (not BMW) as apprentice 35 years ago. I saw what "Scheduled Service" is and what they do at it. Whenever I own a vehicle that is on warranty, I take it to the dealer for scheduled service, then I come home and do it all over again. I only trust that they really change the oil. Not for the rest.
I have a friend who is owner of Suzuki dealership. Before GS I owned 3 Suzuki bikes and he always let me stay by the bike while his mechanic was doing the service. At this point, he is the only dealer I trust. And I guess local police also trust him as they leave all their BMW's and FJR's there for service. He will the one to take care of my bike in future.
