hi lads,

ok im bracing myself for a torrent of abuse but here goes...

03 reg 1150 gs

correct way to check oil level please

says in the manual to ride bike untill the engine has warmed up then turn off and allow to cool for ten min and check the oil on the centre stand

ive also heard to ride untill warm but during the ten min cooling period leave bike on side stand then check oil?

im not a novice to bikes but i am to bmw's ,

Mate Id suggest that the OM is a more authorititive document than any forum chat.

you wont go wrong following the OM in my opinion.

In all honesty I check mine cold on main stand and in about 200k miles never had a drama :)

when its cold there is nowt visible in the sight glass, when its warm there is a little on the centre stand

side stand and warm and its half full,

cautious of everfilling nearly as much as running it underfilled

Not neccessarily the correct way, but, nevertheless, one way!

Don't worry about all this servicing malarkey, just keep riding it.
Around a year of hard riding after the last service was due, when doing about 30mph in traffic, the oil light will come on.
Just ignore it.
About 5 miles after that, the bike will start to slow even though you are opening the throttle further.
At this point, you must add oil to continue your journey.

Whatever way you choose to check it, make sure you use the same way all the time.

Consistency rules.

Me, i have a look once a week first thing in the morning before starting the engine. If i can see oil anywhere in the window that's fine.
Seems to have worked ok for the last 16 years on oil heads.

I have a 2000 1150GS and do exactly the same as Mr Steptoe, use mine everyday and no issues so far after 12 months.

I am just waiting for the which oil question now ........

As it's an older boxer engine you should be using this ;)
