Evening gents, I need to remove the front cover under the plastic one, to re paint it due to bad corrosion. Any tips or links to assist with this project. GS 1200/05. Thanks

There's loads of threads on this if you do a search <hint>:augie

Getting the alternator belt on and off is a major topic

After that it's plain sailing other than putting the timing cover back on without knackering the crankshaft oil seal as it eases over the shaft

Put the time and effort into doing a good paint job as the whole process takes a fair time and isn't something you'd want to repeat every year

When you refit the cover, be sure to protect the metal from corrosion due to dissimilar metals by using a dielectric paint on the steel bolt threads (such as duralac or starbrite) before screwing the bolts back into the engine block for the alternator cover. Do a search on starbrite and you'll probably find an old thread on the subject.

If your bike has a sound-deadening sponge beneath the alternator belt cover, throw it in the bin as it retains salty water from the roads.I would paint or spray some ACF-50 under the alternator belt cover to keep corrosion from starting.

I would also strongly advocate fitting one of Mark Hootons crud catchers to the front of the engine to prevent it getting stone chipped or blasted by grit from the front tyre.

I spent last winter cleaning/stripping/painting/lacquering.

Left the cover on & just masked around it.

Please see the original post in the link below, It has inspired a lot of people to do their own front cover refinish, there is no need or advantage in removing the front cover

Regarding the case screws, I would leave all the old ones in place when applying paint, and the replace them one at a time after painting with stainless, I have just finished a R1100 front case repaint and found if you remove to many case screws oil starts to seep out which somewhat spoils your paint Finnish.
