Corroding fuel filler??

Seem to have an issue with a corroding fuel filler...once I've lifted up the filler cap, the once nicely polished inner part where the fuel pump nozzle sits (stop me if I'm getting too techincal) is now looking decidely shabby and corroding.

I've noticed that after washing the bike, water collects in this area, as does fuel if it overspills. Shouldn't this be draining away somewhere...?

You will notice a small hole when you lift the filler cap. Thats the drain hole that is. Well, it would be, if it wasn't blocked up.

There is a rubber tube attached underneath, which you wont be able to get at, down which the water should drain. This tube should run down to beneath the bike. You might try clearing the tube out with a lenght of wire or similar, as it is easily blocked up. Mine has been blocked up for years, and I cannot clear it at all, so I just put up with it, and dry the water off every so often.

You can't poke down it with wire as inside the tanks it's steel and coils around a bit before connecting to the fuel pump and exiting underneath. Disconnect the 2 pipes on the right hand of the frame below the tank and blow through. You need to do both pipes because you can't tell which one is the filler overflow and which is the vent. ( I just did mine today)

edit, this applies to an 1150, I don't know which model you have.
