Went out for my first ride of the year today and to try out my new hitachi action camera.
I was horrified when I wheeled my bike out of the garage and was greeted by a large area of the black paint on the sump missing and corrosion underneath.
My bike is a year old and I am very disappointed with the corrosion I am finding, already had to get my rear shock sorted due to corrosion under warranty.
Starting to feel like this bike is very poor quality compared to what I have been used to,
Is this normal for an F700GS or any over BMW to suffer with corrosion from such a young age.

Still in warranty? If so, back to the stealer with you and see what their reaction is.

Not as good as your old 1150GS then, Ian?

Sorry about that :nenau

Dunno if I'm reading between the lines here, but I get the impression you put your bike away, and some time later got it out for the first ride of the year?

Russ 'what's his name' on here had severe corrosion of his sump and crankcases ... I suggested he wasn't looking after it correctly and was met with a tirade of verbal abuse :nenau

But with 103,000 + miles and four full winters there is absolutely no corrosion on mine :rob

I'm going with not normal

:postpics

It's got history of the corrosion with the rear shock no doubt they looked the bike over when it was in for the warranty work. :nenau What's the time span from that until now ?

Personaly with it being practically a new bike, I would be thinking on asking them to replace the bike, with a what's next to corrode so fast thought :nenau

However you keep your bike, I would present it back to them like a sniny new pin all but the corrosion :(

:agree

1 year old bike, of course it's still in warranty..... :D

I look after my bike as they are my pride and joy, never use a high pressure washer.
When I told them about the corrosion on the shock, they said to me that it was due to me using a pressure washer and leaving the bike wet.
My reply was" this makes sense then as I wash it with no pressure and sponges and soft brushes and then dry and buff with micro fibre clothes, so I guess as the bike was your demonstrator the issue must lie with you".
I was then told leave it with us and we will sort it..
I do wonder what this bike is going to look like after another year.

My dealer have agreed to replace the sump, but I have since had a good look around and to me it looks like this bike is ageing poorly.
Very disappointed to be honest.
Might be time for an early change, I do like the look of the new Kawasaki Z1000SX TOURING, might be tempted.

I hear they like petrol that's the kwacker. Nice looking bike though. JJH

Twice the cylinders sucking, so yeah guess your right.
If £30 on a Sunday morning puts a bigger smile on my face than £20, then I can live with that.

Off to have my new sump fitted next Tuesday and spoke to the sales guy on the phone telling him how unhappy I am with the corrosion and also that I'm not really jelling with. The bike, he has suggested I try the F800R whilst I'm there and will offer me a good deal.
Don't mind the way this bike looks, has anyone had any experience with this machine, if so I would really appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

Ian,

My bike is 13 months old, and so far its had:

2 new wheels, both front and rear paint flaking off.

Both switchgear replaced

front painted panel, paint flaking off.

The quality of BMW's of late seem to be on the decrease.........

Would I change it.....No! :thumb2

Dealers always sort me out, so im happy :)

Paul

I understand what you mean, but I never really jelled with mine, first time with this sort of bike and I guess it's just not for me.
I used to have a triumph street triple untitled I dropped the bloody thing at 50mph.
Think I might seriously consider there F800R

Mine's 17 months old and I love it:thumb. I've had to have a new sump - a much better part altogether by the look of it - but nothing else so far. Like Paul says my dealers sort me out without any problem, CW of Dorchester - they're great, it's like visiting a bunch of friends:beerjug:. Would I change my bike? Absolutely not:bounce1

Where are the F series made. I know the 650's are made somewhere in Asia but what about the 700 & 800 and the Adventure??

Seems I'm not alone, got the bike repaired this Tuesday and to be fair to my dealer they did it swiftly and are nice guys,
But then jumped on it and rode to my local Triumph dealer and picked up my Tiger 800, so I guess the future corrosion issues, (and looking at it there will be more).
Will no longer be a concern to me.

Probably best if you check out some year old Kawasakis for corrosion before you jump ship.

Already jumped ship and bought a new Triumph, had a kawasaki and it wasn't as bad as this one.
I might of just had a bad experience, might be tempted to come back to BMW for R9T

I hate to say this, but even after I got the new sump and casing fitted after all the hassle I had earlier. The problems are starting all over again.

When I finally got the new cases, I liberally covered the lot with ACF50 and smeared anti corrosion grease inside all the bolt holes just to be sure.

Then when giving the bike a spring clean yesterday, just along the join of the LH casing to the main case, the paint is starting to bubble again!

It looks to me that where the paint finishes and the machined adge of the case begins, there is no adhesion between the paint and the alloy so the edge is vunerable to ingress of water and salt, and thats even with everything covered in ACF50.

Its obviously a production issue and it looks like they still havent addressed it.

Needless to say I can't be ar5ed speaking to BMW again.
