I was cleaning my 2016 GSA and I spotted what looks like rust on the top bracket that crash bar mounts to. I say looks like rust because after taking it to my local dealer BMW claim it is brake dust, much to mine and the local dealerÂ’s amazement. To my eyes the bracket looks like it is galvanised and has been dragged along something and scratched and rust spots seem to bee appearing in these scratches.
Any one else had a similar issue with “Brake Dust” getting on this bracket. Looking at the route it must take to get on there itÂ’s pretty amazing stuff or BMW are massive bull shitters. I know which one I favour.

That's definitely very light corrosion and hopefully there's nothing sinister underneath. Ask to speak to someone with a brain. Just get it logged in the event that it turns into something else/worse.

Autosol metal polish puts a barrier on
Or take off the bars and powder coat them

Brake dust?

Tell your dealer to grow a pair and get BMW to sort it, if it bothers you. :rob

It’s a 3 year old motorcycle made from metal.... it could have been ridden through three winters.....

And even it if was, its a minor piece of corrosion on a crash bar FFS.
Wipe it off.......
This is a wind up :thumb2

hell yes Nige, if I see that on my bike I am calling 999.................and if they cannot help out comes the dremel and acf-50

It’s piss boiling, that’s what it is. BMW has gone to the dogs. :rob :D

Er.. it’s electropolished (untreated) stainless steel. If you get water on it and don’t wash it off, over time it will start to rust. Crash bars on my GSA did exactly the same, as did the pannier fastenings. It’s only on the surface unless you’ve left it for months. As has been said - wipe it off then clean and add some sort of rust inhibitor. Do you not see this all over a bike if you ride it in winter? Brake callipers, fork bottoms, bolts underneath cylinders, bash plate, exhaust mounts etc etc

Wind ya neck in mutty ya silly old sod.

Im sure there'll be a vast majority of people seeing this post and thinking the same. Its not a dig at the OP, but Jeeeeeez:eek:

Its what this forum has come too. A caricature of snowflake politics :D

Wipe it and ride it :aidan

If that’s the state of your bars what’s the rest of the bike like? The bars are the most corrosion resistant bits. JJH

Seen at Dent in May 2018

220,000 miles if I remember

Good care rewards the owner

Micky will testify to this - his 800 GS has 140k but is immaculate

Not cleaning your bike.... typifies a lazy owner and therefore what else doesn't he keep on top of maintenance wise

Use and clean/check/repair/adjust is a good motto

Step 1 , spray with Muc off or similar, leave 5 minutes

Step 2 , rince thoroughly with cold water

Step 3 , go ride round the block to get rid of water resting in engine areas

Step 4 , repeat Step 1 to 3 as needed :D

Never had any corrosion on any of my BMW bikes. I owned my first GS for 14 years. Interestingly enough, the same model and colour as the 1150 above. And none of my LC GSA's since. (15, 66 & 18) And if i did notice the tiny blemish as the OP has posted, I'd have wiped it off with a cloth of either WD40 or ACF50 and thought no more of it.
Get real guys.......
