Hi folks I'm new here and Not driving a gs yet! but I'm thinking of traveling to look at one soon. Its a 2006 adventure with 23k miles and full service history. Which all sounds good! Owner has sent on a few close ups and Pointed out some corrosion on engine casings (where engine and gear box meet In partic) Its not too bad, but is this common? And is there any way to repair? Ie rub it down and repaint? any one got any tips or points? Also is there anything model specific i should look out for? He also said front engine cover was replaced under warrenty. normal ?thanks in advance.

The engine casings are particularly suseptable to corrosion on the GS as is the swing arm. If a stone chips the paint and it is not fixed, then water, salt etc gets under the paint and it just gets progressivly worse. It's not really going to cause much trouble if you keep on top of it but can look rather unsightly. Not had to repair/replace mine so no idea of cost. If you do decide to go for a GS, then worth investing in one of the stainless "Crud catchers" available on ebay or the for sale section on this forum.
Good luck Graham:aidan

Funny! ur alot closer to the bike than me! its 10 miles from Derry airport in Donegal! Long drive home so have to do some research!

Got a 2006 which I've owned since new. The front engine case began showing signs of corrosion about 2 years ago (bubbling paint) and here in North America BMW won't replace them under warranty. It has never seen salt but I removed the foam under the plastic housing which acts as a sponge and holds water. I am told this is the primary reason for corrosion so check and make sure it has been removed from the one you buy.

I think they are about $250 here to replace the engine cover. I haven't bothered. Other than that it is a great bike. Enjoy.
