Corrosion

R1200GS - 8950mls

Just removed RH plastic tank panel, just to be nosey, found the nickel(?) plated cover on the side of the tank white with corrosion
I've been really good (I thought) washing the bike down and spraying all accessable areas with scottoiler FS 365 after most rides, and was feeling quite confident of a corrosion free(ish) winter, now i'm wondering if there are any other hidden parts on the bike that should be getting attention.

Also slight corrosion on front engine cover just at the bottom of the black plastic cover, this is to be changed under BMW warrantee, but i was wondering if water can collect behind the plastic cover, maybe causing the corrosion.

Any info appreciated

I too had noticed a dark spot at the location you mentioned below the plastic engine cover and will take it up with the dealer.

Under the covers it seems fine, but the dealer found paint flaking from the brake pedal and replaced it. I did read a posting to the effect that someone had found rust around the front shock upper mount.

I have found traces of rust around the frame number and inside the rear wheel hub,,looks like im going to have to invest in some ACF-50 cos WD-40 aint working.

I use my bike most days. I am washing mine off with agarden spray -£5 from a car boot sale. Then I am using the Scotoiler preparation with ACF50 at weekends.

I have not seen any problem areas yet but its early days on 4700 miles.

Hi Guys,
I think the problem is caused from too much washing.
It has been proved that some durt now and then does miracles for the GS.

I was surprised at the 1150 GS I test rode showing premature corrosian and Im even more surprised the new 12 GS has it as well. Not good.

had the front subframe painted under warranty at the last service due to corrosion on welds.

At the NEC two of three bike on show for the public to try had corrosion in the same place.

Be interesting to see if what the dealer did will hold back the red stuff.

For those who dont know, get down on the floor and look up under the beak. You will see a black subframe sticking out from around the oil cooler with welds at around 45 degree. Its on thoose joints the rust sets in.

Even given its few problems the 1200gs is the best bike Ive owned.
