My etrex's batteries died during a software update, corrupting the system software. I now get the "system software missing" error, and would like to fix it.

Does anyone know how to get a working unit from here?

I backed it up, but the "restore" button on Garmin Express is greyed out.

Thanks in advance. I go to Spain on Friday, and wold like to take it with me.

Thanks. I'd not normally need to come to the forum for a googlabe aswer, but seem somehow to have got nothing but useless pages, and (mainly) non-ENglish ones when I searched.

I've no idea how I managed that...

Edited to say the first of those is the page that I used to break the unit. UNfortunately it seems that once you've corrupted the system software that you may well be stuffed.

Well, if anyone else ha sthe same problem, and commes acr oss this thread, then Garmin have told me that the only solution is to have it sent back to them to have the software re-installed.

I'm sure that there must be a way to get it into mass-storage mode, and install the necessary file myself, but without knowing the trick, then I don't think that II've got much choice but to return it.
