First of all i have noticed a little amount of fluid around the clutch slave cylinder so i take it i must need a new seal. Anyone know if its a handy enough diy job? The allen bolt closest to the near side looks handy enough to remove but the one on the other side looks like a bit of a pain to get at. Also noticed today that there is a bit of a clunk when pulling in and releasing the clutch. Has anyone else noticed this clunking noise and if so is is normal. Maybe iam just paranoid.

The clutch uses special fluid, not your normal DOT3 or 4.

I get the clunk when operating the clutch on my 2005 model. But only with the engine running. Mostly noticeable in town when slow riding.

Yep, I have done a replacement on a 2005gs. It is certainly do able and a cut down Allen key was the answer. It is #%€{$¥€ fiddly but patience will win. One piece of advice I was given was not to bother to replace the seals but to get a new slave cylinder ( about £55 from memory). The issue being that getting new seals on the slug without damaging them is really tricky and you won't know until the cylinder is back on.

Cheers

The leak might not be the slave cylinder - it could be the gearbox input shaft seal (output end) behind the slave cylinder.

Thanks steptoe i have checked the clutch fluid resevoir and it seems to be full so that would make sense. Is the gearbox input shaft seal an easy diy fix?

Thanks Outtomuch :) Hex heads are rare on these bikes so I did I did say probably a torx.

Generally with clutch slaves I change the whole thing because they cylinder bores often leak with new seals.

On a bigger point - with many gearboxes a leaking input shaft seal is a symptom of a failing input shaft bearing. BMW boxers might be different, but I would be proving that bearing is ok before simply changing the seal.

The input seal output end leaks all by its self. :D
