Hi,
I am about to (I hope) add a G650 X Challenge to the garage. The one I am looking at has a small crack in the subframe by the seat release mechanism. The crack is from the front edge to the first bolt hole. It doesn’t continue after that bolt hole.
The seller dealer is playing it down as “typical”.

Is this typical. Should I walk away?

Thabks

Yeah its weldable but I think I would be stripping plastics and the lock, etc, off for a proper assessment

The man I was going to Tag has already ticked above, he is quite the guru on these bikes !

I agree I would be removing panels , checking it over and repairing it before it got any worse

I assume it's the standard aluminium sub frame and not a steel one so you will need someone who can weld aluminium

the question is....why has it cracked ?
Usual reason is that the two seat retention tabs on either side of the sub frame are missing or have been squashed down putting extra strain on the seat latch and hence stressing the frame at that point . Its only a thin gauge gusset so you get a stress crack

I've seen it before , a lot of the XChallenges will have been used extensively off road and perhaps used and abused

You get a stress crack at that point as the holes for the nut retaiiners are square and the crack propagates from the sharp corner , if they had made them round you probably wouldn't get a crack

Thanks for all your replies. Very helpful and I am glad that nobody said “run away…..don’t look back”.

The bike is used and I guess I have to accept that there will jobs to be done, and it is part of the fun.

I will get it home and strip it down.

Thank you
