My (new to me) 08 GSA screen is cracking all around the mounting holes. Auto windscreens said they cant repair it. I suspect they didnt really think it through, but does anyone know of anything that can wick into and seal the cracks?

This is very much the worst one but the others are also cracking.

Not entirely sure of the solution chap, but my screen was exactly the same when I got my 57 plate (new to me 3 years ago)...hasn't got any worse in 18k miles, and it's been off & on road....if that's a small consolation....:D

Drill a hole in it....

I know it sounds mad but these cracks will creep and get worse. Get a small 1mm drill and drill a hole at the end of each crack.

Water will seep into each crack and flex wider as it freezes.. Drilling holes means the crack reaches the hole and stops there.

You could use a thin cyno glue (model shops), get the thinnest one they do.

I had the same cracks, did the drill thing a good 20,000m ago and it's still going strong. I didn't bother with the glue thing.

Roger.

Crack creep is my concern. I might try the glue option and a fine drill if that doesn't work. My other "worry" is the drill causing even more cracks as it pulls through the far side. :( But 20K and no more cracks sounds good :)

Thanks I'll contact Loctite and see what they can offer. Sorry about the multi posts I forgot they all come to the top. Doh!

Does anyone know what type of plastic the screen is made from?

Ive just had a really close look at the labelling and its got PC in there. So guessing that Polycarbonate.

Drilling a stopper hole is fine to stop a single crack spreading, but you'd need about 15 for that mount and then the middle bit would be in danger of falling out!

It looks to me like there should be a sleeve or bushing in the middle of the mount to stop the bolt being overtightened and to allow some flex. Maybe you could retrofit something to stop it getting worse.

there should be a two part black plastic bush fitted. there is on my GSA.

It looks like the bolts have been over tightened, which shouldn't happen as there's a bush to prevent this. You could fit a steel strip either side of the screen and use new, longer, bolts to clamp the screen, maybe not attractive, but I think it would work.

There looks to be way too many cracks to drill. My guess is the screen will fail if you don't do something soon.

I think its very much at risk.

The little side screens are also cracked & one has now lost a piece so its really not good. However the bike has a full BMW service history so I'm going to ask them what they will do about it. The one cracked spoiler could be down to clumsiness but not when every single polycarbonate** bolt hole has cracked.

** If that's what PC means on recycling label.

Hi There,

By my knowledge every new GS/A is sent in a box to dealer without a screen mounted. So dealer can forget to put the bushes in the hole. Result is obvious...

Sounds like bolts being over tightened , one possibility may be that it has been parked in an enclosed space where some fumes may have had an effect-outside the box thinking but possible.:nenau
