Is this what it looks like with a crank rear seal gone or do they all do that sir.

There's black shit all over the rear section or the block and down to the back of the sump.

Rear of the gearbox has been leaking aswell.

The Torry Canyon springs to mind

Paul,

The leak out of the gearbox rear seal could be caused by the breather being blocked (hole in the earth stud).

Those clutch splines haven't seen grease for a while.

I've seen that before :thumb2
Now are you going to replace the seal ??
If so timing cover off and block the end of the crank, top camshaft sprocket, and resecure timing cover to stop the fecking crank moving forward:blast:blast as you dig old fecking seal out.......
IF it does slip forwards, it's a full strip down :(

You can fit the new seal quite easily :thumb2 as long as you take care.....
Mr Farmer will be along shortly with G/Box advice as thats his dept.:rob

Proff, Can you explain what you mean about the crank moving forward, dont get what your saying, "DOH ME" :thumb:thumb

Joe,

A picture of one of my engines. I'm sure Proff will explain once he's got his gown, mortar board and his pointy stick out.

The crankshaft is located mainly by the rear main bearing and thrusts, remove clumsily and tap end of crank = the crank can move forwards pulling crank thrust bearing off it's spigots
so putting block in front of crank and putting timing cover on stops the bugger...

All Hail StEptoe:bow:bow

I've never done it with alternator still on but StEptoe has posted this method>>

Paul, looking at your pictures i can't see any signs of the rear crank seal leaking, it just looks like clutch dust. When the sealleaks it usually leaves a pool of oil on the ledge under the gearbox.

And on your model if you are going to replace the rear crank seal, you have to pull the flywheel boss off the end of the crank, which can be fun.:D Hence double the warning about blocking the crank at the front case so it can't move backwards causing the rear thrust washer to fall off it it's locating pins.

Thanks Chaps,

I've cleaned the accessable are around the flywheel and there is no wet oil in the vacinity so it probably is just a build up of clutch plate dust.

Cleaned off fairly easily so not going to touch the rear crank seal or oil pump.

I was wondering how the gearbox breathed, wasn't expecting a hollow bolt must admit. Bolt was clear by the way but it does appear to be breathing heavy so I'll clean it all out and replace the pushrod gaiter. The Thrust bearing on the rod looks like new.

Splines will also be lubed before it goes back together.

I understand "now" thanks guy's" Rob, Proff":thumb

If it is a bit oily i would change the gearbox imput shaft seal and the clutch pushrod seal as a matter of corse...
I have seen far more of those giving trouble than crank seals
