Quick question I picked up a used front engine cover for my 1150 last winter and refurbished it but never got around to fitting it on the bike but will be sorting it out over the winter , the seal fitted BMW part nos 11111341357 appears to be a bog standard 30x42x7 double lip oil seal (albeit without a garter spring fitted ).
is there anything particularly special about the seal as the BMW specialists are quoting £13.70 for the seal but the likes of Simply Bearings are quoting less than £3 for the same seal but with the garter spring ?

I saw the title and was going to wade in and say avoid those new seals they are a right pain (as in the plastic membrane boyos!)

Its a seal to hold low pressure oil from leaking out

I think when I did them I just got a garter seal and if you want to go posh? Then just go for the Viton

Sorry to piggyback…. I’m in almost the exact same position now. I’ve got my cover off for respraying and the seal wasn’t leaking but has obviously been disturbed and has also been there for 23 years…. Should I replace it as part of the job or get the cover back on and see how it goes?

I guess the question is what’s more likely - a leak from the original seal or somehow fitting the new one wrong? Also, any advice on fitting the new seal?

Cheers
Mike

Just get a standard old fashioned oil seal 30 x 42 x 7 Not the Present Idiocy of the "membrane "type

As mentioned its only to keep the oil from dripping out

Your old one is X years old and has now been disturbed For under a £5 I would change it

Cheers! Would you advise I fit it into the cover then slide the whole lot over the crankshaft, or put the cover back on and fit the seal retrospectively?

Good Question I "usually" am fitting them to repair an oil leak and not disturbing the front cover location and Its been a minute since I refurbed or changed a front cover at all!

Refresh my memory? Are there locating dowels to locate the front cover ?

Looking at it I will be putting the covering back on first with appropriate sealant and then I will install the new seal , I've made up a suitable driver but will use a piece of thin plastic or tape on the shaft to protect the lip on the seal as an added insurance

There’s two short dowels irrc (I’d have to nip out to the garage to check)

I think the ‘book’ way is just as Neil describes, but I know 1150 owners are known for finding alternative methods!

Neil - would you mind sharing the link to the seal you’re getting please? I looked on simply bearings and used the measurements you gave, but got bogged down by the different seal types….

Went for this one , needs to be a double lip , there were cheaper ones

NAK 30x42x7mm Nitrile Rubber Double Lip Rotary Shaft Oil Seal with Garter Spring TC

Seals from Simply Bearings turned up , decent quality and two for less than the price of one from M/Works or Sherlocks
