Hello all, can I pick your collective brains please ?

I and the lady wife are off to Morroco in the new year on my 1200GS (2005 model), I am thinking of getting a set of crash bars ( maybe uppers to ) incase i drop it in the sand etc.

Can anyone recommend a good set / make that you are happy with. Just as importantly does anyone know of any to avoid like the plague.

Thanks for any help

Rod

Ive got SW Motec ones on my GS. Its the best £140 I have spent on it.

You can also get a set of upper bars to bolt on, but you need to have the lower bars.

Personally I wouls avoid the BMW bars, low speed off still saw damage to the 1200 cylinder head covers whereas on previous 1150 I had Hepco and Becker that took the same without any damge to the casings.

Aye, the BMW ones protect the front of the cylinder heads, but I think they will also try to flog you the metal cylinder head protectors (like on the GSA).

The SW Motech and H&B ones "wrap round" the cylinder heads giving decent protection (in my opinion)

Engine Bars

But what can you fit with a Remus downpipe?

Just be aware that with the wrap around bars you lose ground clearance. If you don't go for it in the twisties this may not be an issue. My choice was the BMW bars and the head guards - now I can keep up with my mates on R1s.

S&W Motech look robust, give good protection, are very well finished, and seem to fit well.Very pleased with mine so far. They havn't been put to the test yet........phew.

I had the SW Motech ones fitted at first, but changed to the TT ones. Superb quality, but they can touch down when 'going for it'. You do have to at least loosen them for carrying out a valve check (or take them off completely), but that's done in a couple of minutes and is no real hardship. You don't need any other protection either, tho I had bought the BMW plastic head guards and can't leave them off now as they have marked the finish somewhat. Yes, kinda expensive compared to the other non BM makes, but not much more than the oe BMW bars and offer greater protection.

DavyF - why is there a pressure washer attached to Lara Croft's genitals?

SW Motech for me. Easy to fit and superb finish. Does anyone do crash bars to protect the crash bars ?

Got the SW Motech ones, don't think theres alot of difference between those and the H&B ones, I do know you can get the pegs down on the twistie stuff and the bars were fine, if you need anymore ground clearance than that consider a move to MotoGP :thumb2

+1 for H&B.

Most cornering ground clearance issues are usually due to pushing the bike down in corners whilst keeping yourself upright:beerjug:
