crash bars catching ground

anybody had trouble/accidents by crash bars touching down,i got some second hand ones hepco becker and noticed both had been touched down, should i fit them or take my chances

I expect you'll find the marks are the result of the crash bars doing their job

The grounding scratches are probably from low-speed off roading "get offs", my H&B bars also show signs of grounding which I did myself at low speed. The scratches could easily be confused with a higher speed off.

The bars are very strong and protected my bike admirably when I got sideswiped by a car: GS 1, Audi nil. Money very well spent IMHO.

If I were you I would have no hesitation in fitting them.

I had the bike well over and the bars haven't touched down. even if they did its a nice curved surface which will produce some impressive sparks but won't dig in.

I'll let you test that one out Phil Might find that they lever the wheels off the ground though

Both sides of my BMW bars have marks of touching down 'cos I've dropped it on both sides while stationary or nearly so.

If I run my fingers over the marks I can tell they are "up and down" the bar because the bike rolled on them rather than "back to front" because it slid along the road...

Excellent add-on. I bought the BMW ones and they did the job - protection from low-speed / stationery offs. If you are worried about touching while going around corners at speed (leaning) then you need to adjust your body posture - IMHO you need to lower the bikes centre of gravity not tip it over more

I was worried about this initially but haven't touched them down yet. I put my lack of lean down to the fact that we use adventure type tyres (or perhaps I'm just old and slow).

20 years ago I was winning proddy races so they can't be that bad.

You must get your knee down and protect your chrome!, you will possibly find as the others said slow get off or more likely fallen off the stand on soft ground. You will have a job to ground these even two up with camping gear on the back. Try my new invention, elbow sliders only for fast men you understand.

Not Strictly true the right hand bar on your bike has been decked cornering .

Dont recomend it though as soon as they touch the front tyre starts to lift and it aint nice !!!

Yeah, but I know which ones I did...

I imagine the front tyre would lift even more if you'd put the cylinder head down, another five or ten degrees to get that on the floor would be even worse...

Are we talking 1150 or 1200? If 1150, the bars can touch down quite early and lift the front wheel leading to a real 'brown trouser' moment. The 1200 bars are much better in this respect and I have never grounded mine, despite determined efforts.


P.S. How're ya keepin', ya fat makkem? Ain't seen ya since the NW200 a few years back!

I have almost ground through the RH H&B bar on my 1200; fortunately the grounding didn't have any dramatic effect on the front tyre's grip It was the only way I could get past my mate on his GSXR ...

Fitting F & R Wilbers shocks has now made this beyond my abilities; the shocks are the same length, so I presume they have stiffer springs.

i am surprised you didnt make a set of wooden crashbars , that way it will save a lot of damage when you fall over crossing fords
