Crash helmet - allowed as hand baggage?

I've taken mine as hand laggage before with no problems, but agree that the new security measures have just made the 'jobs worth's' worse!

We flew to Canada before Christmas, my 4 year old had one of those baloons that you twist up and it was made into a poodle type dog - hardly an offensive weapon, but the security guy went off for 10 minutes to 'get guidance'!

I've also been on a flight to Rome recently with just hand luggage when I forgot to take my pen knife off my car keys - went through the scanner in my coat pocket on both legs, and they didn't notice it either time.

It seems that, whatever advice you get, or who you seek clarification from, it will still be a lottery.

Virgin wouldn't let me take my Shoei full face onto a London-San Francisco flight in August, a few days before the liquid bomb scare, which occurred while I was over there.

They told me that if I checked it in it would get 'special treatment' - yeah, right. I managed to pack it in my rucksack to my satisfaction to be checked in.

I didn't try on the way back - there was hardly anything allowed on board!
