The crash bars look fine but your header pipes need a tube of Autosol and some serious effort! ;)

Hi jonboy!

Don't know when your 1200 arrive. But if you have not ordered it with chrome exhaust manifoilds -- yours will look just as the dutch ones! Reorder know if you have time.

The part number is: SA nr. 340

The Hepco & becker bars wrap around the cylinder head and completley protect it from grounding, some dealers will tell you they have to remove them to get the valve covers off, this is bollocks, they just need to be loosened and there is enough clearance to get the covers off.

I do my own maintenance and all I do is back off two bolts by 5mm.

Thanks for the info, but what a pain. Glad you don't mind it.

Does anyone know of decent crash bars that do NOT require that you loosen or remove or otherwise touch them in any way to remove the valve covers?

Emoto, you may check out BMWs own crashbars for the 12'er.
They have partnumber: 71 60 7 677 270. They cost 250 €

Does anyone have any pictures of the H&B bars fitted onto a bike? And black rather than shinyshiny ;)
I'd love to see what it looks like on the bike... :D

Waiting for mine to arrive, hopefully today. When they are fitted I will post a pic. However, I have opted for the shiney ones to match the rest of the metal work on the bike.

Very kind of you, Sir. That'll do fine! :) :) If it doesn't I'll just have to use my imagination and/or photoshop... :D :D

Eagerly awaiting :)

Hepco and Becker Bars

Here are a few pics showing the bars fitted to my bike. Obsevations: Bars need to be dry assembled first. Where the tubes slide together the paint or whatever it is on the inserted bar ends needs to be removed otherwise the bars will not fit together. Also the alignment of the bolt holes which allow the bars to be secured to the cross member needs to be checked. The offside of mine was some 4 mm out of alignment. Thus I had to elongate the hole in order to make them fit. Other than that a fairly straightforward job. Took about 5 minutes to actually fit the bars but another 45 mins getting the things to fit correctly.

Great pics Gazza! :beerjug:

From the pictures it seems like the bars don't interfere with removal of valve covers. Would you agree?

Look Good Gazza:cool:

any chance of a pic from the front showwing both sides please.

My only concern stopping me ordering is ground clearance, how much has the horizontal bar reduced it ? Have you lent the bike over at standstill to see if it makes much difference?

Thanks for those most excellent pictures! I'm sold on the protection, but I'm worried about the cornering ability. I know the heads are high up normally, but those bars do not only come down, but also out (from a lean-angle-perspective)...

... Am I worried without any reasons?

I.e Do they scrape the ground:
a) Never - other stuff scrape first.
b) A bit earlier than before
c) Too early - can't lean the bike
d) Stop worrying and go buy them :D

:beerjug:

Thanks again, most excellent!

Hmmm... I've just had a look at some pictures of me riding Gerrards at Mallory Park, unfortunately the pics are taken from the outside, so you can't really see how far or close the heads are. It was also my first time at Mallory...

... But what I can see from the pics is that the heads are never really close to the ground, and a bit of decreased groundclearance would probably not interfere with riding at all... Question still is, how much do they interfere...
... Another question is, how much more will I lean the bike once I know the bike (and track)...?

OK.... I think that picture says it all - if I can lean that bike that far over, it really is better that the crash bars touch the ground. :D :D :D

Joker

That bike is on the main stand though!

Is it just me or do those bars look wonky (technical term):cockeye

Yes, I agree, and I was thinking that it'll sag quite a lot in the corners, but, that's still quite a respectable lean you're going to have to achieve before you're going to be looking for titanium sliders for those crash-bars....

I agree about the wonky look (got a techincal dictionary here next to me)... but, then again, I've taken pictures of my bikes rear wheel many times, and I've never managed to get it to look straight...

ILLUSIONS, ILLUSIONS!!!

(or, maybe wonky bikes?) ;)

:P :D :D

Fitting Hepco & Becker crashbars

BTW - I took some photos and made a few notes as I was fitting my bars. I will type them up if anyone is interested.
