hi does anyone know off the top of their heads the crate dimensions for a gsa 1200.
am looking at shipping by james cargo or doree bonner ? if anyone has suggestions ,reccomendations or advice .i have flown the uncrated bike inter continent so far but never shipped by ocean.all replies welcome, cheers.

Have a look at horizonsunlimited on the web for advice here. Seems it depends if your paying by weight or volume.

Screen off, front wheel out? So many variables.

Be mindful of port costs... Sometimes flying can be cheaper.

Roger.

sea or air

hi roger yes thanks for that i will repeat the question on HU site.i would prefer to only dismantle the screen and mirrors for flying or going by sea.cost me 1600 bucks to fly from oz to usa(2010) and 1800 bucks from toronto to london.costs so far in quotes are around 750 £ by sea and 1500£ by air.i am aware of the oz customs bovine scatology and am a bit dubious about all the hidden costs of arriving in oz by sea.
anyway i still need the dimensions of a crate to fit gsa with only the screen and mirrors removed if any one out there has the info?

Would it be worth you chatting to your local BMW Dealer and asking if they would let you measure up one of the factory cardboard/timber framed cartons the bikes arrive in?

It may just give you an approximate starting point on size? Just a thought?

and while your at the dealer why not ask them for a box and the bits of supports and watch a new bike being uncrated then copy.

help

i might be of some assistance.
i recently returned to uk from nsw with my gsa 1200in oct 2010.
crated the bike myself and shipped myself via a removal company.
used movements international in sydney who liaised with white and co here and . Built a steel frame flat pack crate from an old kubota machine crate in a previouse life. right width and length only needed making higher. Was working for a dealer and was going for scrap otherwise.
Tex screwed 1/4 ply to it to protect bike from other packed objects. Total volume 4 cu/mtr.
Cost to make approx 150 pounds including pit stand bolted to floor of crate and wheel tie down.
Total shipping cost 300 pound only . no duty no vat as owned for 12 months and was keeping not selling on within 12 months. not sure of duty rates and gst entering oz. Most probably will have clearance and fumigation costs there.

Reason for crate and box was that they are able to pack as goods not a vehicle therefore able to utilise all space in a comntainer and stack all over it greatly reducing costs.
Will be returning in feb 2013 myself to perth and therefore still have the crate and willl be doing the same again. Only difference is that i will have to check suitabiltiy of ply used i.e bug treatment.
Drain all fuel leave oils, disconnect battery. I only removed handguards as were slightly rubbing i crate and panniersas were slightly too wide so created compartment for them. ride in ride out crate tied down with ratchet straps and wheel chock and tie downs. Sit bike on centre stand too as stops bouncing and saves pulling down on suspension.
can provide photos of set up if required.

Freight

James cargo ued to do it for you, they used old crates from bmw dealers that

Anything wooden going to Australia has to be treated.

We now have to use heat treated pallets stamped as conforming to the regulations.

Hurricane

You should be okay with the plywood as it is not considered 'Wood' by AQIS as it has been in effect manufactured (Layers of wood & glue) and therefore bugs do not live in it unlike natural timber.

As someone mentioned earlier, Dave Milligan ships bikes from Oz to UK and back. They aren't crated but in a purpose built frame then bolted to the floor of the container. A couple of shipments will be going back in June and July, these are bikes that he has sent over in March/April for continental rides for us mob from Oz.

flew it in the end

just flew my bike in with james cargo from heathrow to perth australia.by sea was going to take between 6 and 14 weeks and all the extra hidden costs made it desirable to fly.
they use original bmw crates and you just drop it at the depot in heathrow.i left all the panniers open but somewhere along the way both of the locks where smashed open (obviously by someone who has no idea how to open the bmw cam type locks).it took less than 10 days to get to perth and really was quite simple.sad about the damage as i had to strap the box up to get home after two years away this is the first damage i have had :-(
arriving in australia ......hhmmmm well that is a whole different subject but if anyone needs the incomprehensible laid out just pm and i will give you the heads up.
total cost was £1620 and $400 at this end for ?!?!? (australian bollox tax).
so now i just have to try and conform back into society get a hair cut and get a real job....an i never did that before anyway :beer::beer:

Good to hear you got it all sorted, not good to hear of the brainless twats who can't open an unlocked metal box!

Watch out for the water going the 'wrong way' down the plug hole, it may catch you out ;-)

Have fun!
