Signed up to work three days over Christmas for Crisis.

Anyone else for here volunteering?

Be the thrid year I have done this, and is a good reality check on how lucky we are, especially how everyone is saying how hard done by they are given current economic climate

With my lad away in Kenya this year xmas is just going to be another normal working week, nights xmas eve and xmas day.

Which is fine with me cos I ain't a big fan of it.

Tom,
you can just work as a general volunteer which can be anything from acting as security to keep guests in the guests, handing out washing kit, clothes, sorting bedding, welcoming guests, etc, general chatting and pointing in the right direction for more specific needs.

Nothing tasking, and very rewarding

Or if you have specific skills, you can offer them

It is a bit of an eye opener, but certainly make you appreciate what you have

Yep - signed up and going

Both me and mrs toast going on 25th and 26th - thought it about time we gave something back. It's our first time: actually, Mrs T did some work in Hospices so is used to giving something back. We have volunteered to help out in zone 1 - details not out yet. Might see one of you "down and outs" there

Dependency Centre

Too scared to opt for that one.

Centre 1 for a couple of shifts. About the presentation .. however well they were selling the idea that cleaning toilets or cleaning feet being "actually not that bad" .. I still am not convinced

I found it very rewarding.

The first shift was a bit quiet and there was quite a bit of hanging around. Second and third days were busier and met some interesting people.

The majority of guests really appreciate you for giving up your time for them.

Felt a bit sad on the last day dropping mini bus load of guys back on the street around Victoria. They were all very polite and thanked me for dropping them off, but just seeing them wander off with their worldy possesions in a few bags was tough.

I will hopefully be giving up my time to help this coming Christmas.

Met a "guest" last week

Last Saturday myself and Mrs toast were walking through the park at the rear of the Savoy on our way back to Waterloo when we saw one of the guests from the Battersea drop in centre. He seemed a little fatter and he filled up on 2 dinners a day whilst there, and was trying (not very hard me thinks) to make his way back to Ireland. The bottle of red wine would make his journey a little more circuitous I believe!

We stopped and had a chat for 15 minutes and then went on our merry way. Small world eh!

Hi All!

After Darkhorse's suggestions last year, I volunteered and although it was a bit boring it was very worthwhile.

Boring because I did the general volunteers shifts which meant guarding doors for most of the day. Essential but boring.

Just signed up again this year for the Finsbury park centre that I was at last year. This time hopefully teaching basic IT skills.

Well worth doing and as Darkhorse says there are always a couple of fit ladies doing this and you know they have a good heart
