I stayed several nights in Croatia last year. B&B in private houses ranged from 15 euro (no breakfast & shared bathroom between 3 rooms) to 40 euro (ensuite) incl breakfast per night per room. Standards are generally a bit lower than Austria.

When travelling on the coast road to Dubrovnik, B&B seemed reasonably plentiful. As usual I did not pre-book anything and just turned up on spec. Further inland was less touristy and accommodation was more limited however I always found a bed.

Paid €35 per night for a whole apartment in Senj in July '06.

Paid the equivalent of between £8 and £12 per person in sobe in various places during July / August '05.

Hotels tend to be expensive by comparison to sobe (sobe=room w/bed, no breakfast), the latter being almost everywhere (and certainly just about everywhere you'll probably be going).

Tourist inflation has been relatively high between '04 and '06. Price of walk around the walls of Dubrovnik rose from 30 Kuna to 50 Kuna over that time. However, away from the tourist trail much less so.

Cappucino usually between 5 and 8 kuna - equivalent of 50p to 80p ish - always in nice cup with saucer and of a size that is drinkable, unlike the coffe flavoured milk vat served by coffee shops in the UK (why do they do that?)

Restaurants remain good value, especially away from tourist hot-spots. e.g. Big salad, full mixed grill main-course with chips, veg etc. plus water, came to less than 80 kuna.

No alcohol when driving reduces cost of meals! The amount of alcohol allowed in the blood stream while driving is zero. However, I haven't been stopped and breathalysed in the three times we've been. (Haven't been stopped, period!).

Whatever - it won't break the bank... enjoy roads just made for a GS... and watch out for mad drivers...

Chis.
