There are several companies which sell a crud catcher which fits under the number plate and, it is claimed, they stop mud and road debris from being flung up onto the top box and pillion. At a cost of around forty quid I think these are expensive for what are, in effect, bits of scrap metal from the workshop floor.

To test out their effectiveness I fabricated a similar device from the plastic lid of a Family Circle box of biscuits, gaffer taped it in place and lo and behold ...... the result wasn't impressive. It looks quite good, and a number of fellow bikers have told me it is very visible from the rear but the net effect has certainly not convinced me to buy a £40 version

No doubt those who have bought the 'proper' version will seek to convince me that they are worth the money but, as they say in Scotland, "I ha' ma' doots"

I bought a spare number plate carrier, and had a play with making a new bracket. The new bracket sticks the numberplate out at a much steeper angle and has worked well at stopping crud flying up over the rear rack and making the seat muddy etc. Looks good too :thumb2 (probably more effective with a standard No. plate size too...)

I got one of the Wunderlich extendas (£32) when I removed the standard rear crud catcher. It extends the number plate by about 5 inches and while the difference is not dramatic the rear tyre doesn't pebbledash the top box and back of the bike with quite so much enthusiasm.
You could make the same sort of thing from a bit of old Tupperware and save yourself some money.

Plastic trays from B/King (Red) or McDs (Blue) have the correct lip and merely require a little dremel time whilst digesting the congealed lips and eyelids :rob
