On the road, for now:-)
:thumb2Any ideas............my 1998 1100 with 65k seems to or has started to crunch gearchanges when shifting 2nd to 3rd. She doesn't jump out of gear at all, doesn't get false neutrals ever and there are no other problems that I have noticed. I recall having ridden k1100's that do this in the past but would like to know if its an age related qwerk or is she on the way to mechanical failure. I am off on another trip in october and dont fancy pushing it across europe if I dont have to.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

I've replaced my M94 'box with an M97.
The replacement was from a 1999, low-mileage R850R and it does exactly the same.
Sometimes it will shift 2nd to 3rd smoothly, other times it feels as though the change has to be made more slowly, almost as if half the change is de-selecting 2nd, then the following half is selecting 3rd!
It never selects a false neutral, nor jumps out of gear so, until something fails, I'm putting it down to 'character'!

Thanks

Hi there, thanks for the reply m8. On my way home from work today I found that if I slow the gear changes down then she doesnt do it really.
Hopefully you are right and it is just character on the old girl and she will keep going strong.

I reckon its down to technique, when I picked up my 1100 last year the changes were really clunky, after a thousand miles I was beginning to get it right, I was the same with my last boxerbike too, its hard to describe but you certainly have to be positive with the lever, it also helps me to let the engine spin up a little rather than short shifting it, that said these bikes can produce all kinds of vibey feelings and rumbles from time to time, still the gearbox oil comes out looking pretty much like it did when it went in.

Try changing the gear oil to EP75W90 semi synthetic!

That Should make a difference if there's something else lurkin in there

try revving a little higher in each gear and a clutchless change either method should smooth it out also change the gearbox oil i use halfords gl5 80/90 ep

crunchy gears !

Strip & clean the linkages - especially the pivot point of the gear lever
Then fill gear box with 75W90 Semi Synthetic gearbox oil - magic

cheers
