Crush Washer

Eng, I am doing a gearbox oil change tomorrow. I nipped into my BMW dealer today and purchased the two sealing washers for the job.... a whopping 52pence for the pair.:D
I also have a selection of fibre and copper washers at my disposal, but I'm sure the oem seals will do the job.

Timpo.

I'd love to know what size they are - can you measure them and let me know please?

P.S. 10 shiilings and 4pence ha'penny (approx) sounds pricey!

OK, one is 17.5mm OD, 14.42mm ID, 1.38mm thick.
The other is 21.8mm OD, 18.34mm ID, 1.38mm thick.

Timpo.

Thanks - actually I think that both of those are larger than the original - the smallest is bigger than the one I fitted - but if you have to use either of them then go for the smallest - the 18mm one will ride off-centre as you tighten it and crush unevenly, just like the last one I did!

P.S. here is some more info from the merkin site: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=377988 - see it ain't just me being a twit!

Shenzi - when you change your geabox oil, let us know what you find.

Have to be next week now, my dealer in Montpellier has the crush washers in stock but the traffic is going to be crazy tomorrow apparently so I will wait until Tuesday.

My Wurth 14x18 copper washer seems to have held overnight, no sign of any weeping whatsover; however I will go for a long ride tomorrow to get the oil nice and hot, then let it stand overnight gain - if it doesn't weep then job done! It just bugs me that the BMW dealers can't supply the the correct original washer - arrrrggggghhhhh!

Yes, that figures

"Electronics." As an ancient 'nuts and bolts engineer' I can understand that anything over a certain size ( 0.00001mm ?) can produce problems!

the rounded edge shouldnt have owt to do with sealing, crush washers work on the flats not the edges,
dnt waste your time with dowty washers on aluminium ,

Is that RetroBus Lyon or Royal British Legion? :)

"..Is that RetroBus Lyon or Royal British Legion?" It is the Royal British Legion and we do have an active branch in Lyon. We have a presence at many ceremonies and the locals do still very much appreciate the British contribution to the libeeration of this country.

Had always assumed that the RBL was only in the UK and some commonwealth countries.

changed my engine oil today, this is what i have on a 2008 gsa.

Sump plug has a conicle section near the bottom which keeps the crush washer central on the bolt.
Washer is 16mm inside and 20mm outside and 2mm thick.

Changed the gearbox oil on saturday, went for a 130 mile ride today - no sign of a weep - hurrah!

Washer 14x18 copper - a bit larger than the original but it has worked. Still not got my head why BMW do not specify the correct size and/or type but I give up trying to find out!

Yeah but - we were talking about the gearbox oil!
I guess the principle is the same although that washer looks totally different to the original gearbox one.
