It was the long hot Summer of 1981.
The beautiful, young Lady Di' was to marry the... er...Prince Charles.
I was a Trainee Technician Apprentice for British Telecom and may mate Andy Fuller was an Apprentice Maintenance Plumber for British Steel.
It was a year since we'd started work, so I was able to afford a Z200 Kawasaki and Andy a CB125 Honda.
We both held provisional licenses.

Our machines were meticulously prepared with the very best equoipment and accessories and we set off.

First evening we reached Ripon.

Next day we headed south towards Chepstow.

We stopped quite often, as Andy's bike had developed a weeping fork seal .... on the side of the disc brake :blast
We wrapped a cloth around it and stopped regulary to wring it out...

Eventually we arrived in Chepstow and camped at the racecourse.

We continued south over the Severn Bridge getting bollocked for being on "L" plates on a motorway....:augie

...and after a long, hot day reached our goal...along with everyone else...

We camped nearby.

I think we bought some cider and lay on the grass, drinking it... check-out the weather...

The following day we began to retrace our route and stopped at Chepstow again and the following night stopped at a site near Weshpool where my parents and sister were caravanning...

Our Lab' "Victor" seemed pleased to see us:

My sister, now a tender 40 Summers young will not be pleased to see this:

...and a gratuitous Austin Maxi shot featuring Andy's head and foot.

I can't remeber if we had another stop on the way home or just rode all the way in one go - There's no more pictures, which I've scanned from "Instamatic" sized slides, hence the black either side.....

So that was it: My very first tour.

Well done!
Good to see older photos of real adventures - it took me more than 30 years to reach Lands End!

Pssst! Er, with a bit of work that photo 7 (camper leaning on/off water standpipe) could have another airing in the Caption Section!

............................... :D

I only got to Thirsk race course on my KE 50 when i was 16 :P

PS ...... It had a full blown KE 100 V8 lump in it though :mmmm

PPS ... Is that a Top Teck Top Box :thumb

Amazing how things seem so dated,it's not that long ago.Bet it was a great adventure, everything was when you were young.

coulda been mid 70's lol

excellent - i was driving fergie tractors at 16 :D

not 500 miles RESPEC'

Did your Z200 chew it's camshaft? Remember my brother having one and trying to find one in the breaker near impossible.

No... blind bint in an Allegro turned it into a banana... it was written-off very shortly after that trip...

Who needs a GS?

I've not been to lands End!:tears

Who needs a GS anyway.....!:thumb Looks like a grand adventure and your sister looks like a younger version of the skinhead kids mum in 'This Is England......!:D

Great memories:thumb2

For some bizarre reason I've just purchased a CB250 to stage a 're-enactment' of my first continental bike trip 30 years ago.

It's slower than I remember and I remember it was slow:)

L plate explorers :thumb2

what a cool find, makes me want to dig my way through my boxes of stuff which are still packed from when I first went on the run back in 89

enjoyed it and sad in equal measure (loved the photos, I made it as far as North Berwick when I had my L plates), I was hoping to see you with big hair and platforms.....:P

Very good Chris, I enjoyed that :thumb

Ahh the good ol days when summers had sunshine and blue skies
