This is my bizzarre way to sort out the problem to the rusting that occurs to the crossbar of the main stand. I had this happen to my 2004 model which had a curved cross bar. This suffered with terrible chipping of the paint which resulted in rust. I cured this with self amalgamating tape wrapped around the cross bar carefully. Problem solved.

Fast forward 6 years and I thought the build quality of my 2010 DOHC would be better. Nope, same problem on the straight crossbar. I repainted it but it didn't last. After much head scratching I looked around my garage for something to use. After years of bike ownership and replacing standard handlebar grips for heated items, I had accumalated several pairs of rubber grips. I grabbed a matching pair, slit them lengthways and, using black sealant, wrapped them around the crossbar of the stand. They needed a little trimming at the ends and sealing at the ends and the lengthways slit with sealant to make them waterproof.

Hey presto, job done. No more rust.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a shrinkwrap product that also had self-amalgamating/adhesive properties so that it could be applied cables and tubes that do not have a "free" end .........

Rusty cross bar

I had the same problem
Purchased a piece of black pipe from DIY shop with correct inside diameter, cut the pipe to length and slit it down the middle coated the cross bar in ACF50 to stop any more rust and allow me to fit the pipe over the crossbar, it looks the same as standard bar is protected and does not get affected by any stone chipping.

The location is in a harsh environment but I can't remember my 1150 being as bad and it should be better finished and fit for purpose, not rusting within days of ownership.

Ahh they all do that Sir!

Just buy some helicopter tape:

Can you see it?

Yep,

I like the idea of the section of hose ..... think I will do that.

I complained to my dealer about the various rusty bits ... All the normal places on the bike including the stand cross bar - he pointed out that some of these sit in very harsh, salty, and sometimes raging hot and then cold places.

My comment was that my car doesn't rust like this, also we can build huge oil rigs and dump them in saline for years, does it corrode away, - he pointed out that they do,- it just gets regularly treated and with the car - it's just that you don't see the corrosion on the engine and underparts, car body panels are easier to deal with.

No option but to live with it and to try and hold back the ravages with ACF50
Stainless bolts, WD40 and other stuff.

I am coming to believe that a) BMW make items down to a budget, the quality is not there - and b) The powders and coatings are just not up to standard in places - most likely for environmental reasons,

Rusty bar

I've put black electrical plastic ribbed conduit on my centre bar with 3x cable ties ,looks authentic an jobs a goodun :bounce1

Helicopter tape

If you can get Heli' tape on when something is new and in good condition, it's excellent. I bought a load for my mountain bike and it's stood up to no end of abuse for the last 4 years. That's the way I'd go too.
