I need to change 2 of the bolts (one on each side) on my cylinder head covers, as I’ve removed the protectors in favour of bars.

I’m concerned when I unscrew, I’ll dump a load of oil? Any tips aside from putting the bike on its side?

As long as top one is in place, cannot see the problem, what bars are you trying to fit, and which bolts are you actually talking about, take a picture it would help.

Ah thank you.

Picture below. I’ve removed them and fitted the BMW crash bars. However the bolt on the furthest right in the picture now has a spacer that is in place of the original cylinder bolt. Problem is, they have a rubber bung on the inside so to pull with force means losing the bung on the inside. Hence the need to remove and replace with the standard bolt....

That’s what I was hoping. I just didn’t want to lose the rubber bung in the case pulling it out

Answer to the question: You will loose perhaps 1 dl oil, or less.
Put a tray underneath the head to catch the spill, then refill with new oil when done.

Be careful not to tighten these bolts too much as they are a very low torque and snap easily

Thanks for the advice guys, I’ll get it done today...

Ok hope the picture below explains it a little more easily, as to what you have to do with the bung, fist you feed the new bolt through the engine guard, then at the rear first slide the washer, and put a bit of fairy liquid or oil on the hump of the bolt and slide the bung over it, look well a picture below and it will make sense.
