Cylinder head protectors.

Machine Art head covers on my 1250GS
Had to lay it over on the right side the other week after I thought i was in Neutral, just couldn't get it back upright despite screaming at it and dancing on one leg
Nothing else other than the head cover touched the floor, few minor marks. Made a horrible noise, but did its job
Very impressed with them but they don't protect the upper front of the cylinder, got a stone chip
The Wunderlich one's look like they offer more frontal protection than the Machine Art ones

HGS, thanks for this, all helps in considering the options. I think I prefer the less ornamental look of the xheads but I'll probably go for the wunderlichs instead.

(btw, I meant of course in my post above that wunderlich have confirmed that their covers fit with the oem bars!)

If it helps I had SW Motech bars on my 1200s but when I got the 1250 they wouldn't fit so I got the xheads instead. they're excellent quality and look neat compared with the scaffolding but one of the reasons I got them is if I do drop it (Dropped my 1st GS on both sides :blast ) You can buy them individually rather than having to buy a pair

I put a skid block on mine (£5 ebay) and the SW motech ones stand up in a crash

I've done that as well - crash bars for crash bars - but do add that extra little bit of protection for relatively little outlay

The Wunderlich ones look the nicest to me, they have a telephone number for technical assistance apparently. Probably an understanding of the German may be an advantage though.

It took me a while but I finally decided on these, easy enough to fit and they look the business. £182 though! :blast I keep telling myself, yeah but they look good! :)

Gents, just to clarify, am I to understand that the bars on a 1250GSA will not protect the heads? I ask because I am awaiting delivery of a 2020 R1250 GSA Rallye with the full Billet pack.

Out of interest why would you want both?

I took a slow speed tumble in the snow, the bars to not protect the cylinder heads.

I believe the BMW guards fit with the bars. I have just ordered some!

Ouch......that's not good

Would have expected the bars to keep it off the ground

I have SW Motech ones on mine and laid the bike down on the carpet just to see the distance and bars keep the engine cover far from the ground.
However, SW Motech bars were very hard to install and there was one point with big tension on right side of the bike that I solved installing one extra spacer that I had left from my previous bike's crash bars.

Touratech ones do.

The Touratech ones are much more substantial than the ones pictured (I am assuming the are BMW one's).
I did have a set of TT bars fitted originally last year. Excellent quality and fit.
I then went for the machine art head covers as my thought was the bars were ugly and any tip at speed would probably cause a lot more to worry about than the cylinder head but I wanted something should I drop it. I did. They worked
Still think it's poor that those shown don't protect the head cover

Wunderlich cylinder head protectors bolt on to outside of GS Adventure bars and are solid protection, good for dragging machine when its on its side out of ruts. Well designed and strong
