Would welcome feed back from members re: best options for mainly road use.I've also heard that a bar system enhances the look of the machine.

Generally protection is offered (or not) by either engine bars or cylinder head covers.

The plastic BMW cylinder protectors (£65) aren't reckoned to be of much use. The Touratech ones are probably better at about £100.

As for engine bars, the effectiveness of the BMW ones is debatable, the Touratech ones are a long time away yet and the Hepco and Bekker/Wunderlich ones seem to be a good option.

You might correctly guess that I've got the H&B bars. A good price here:

That is a good price and the colour seems a good match. Are they easy to fit? I think theres a guide somewhere here, but I mean easy to fit by someone spannerly challenged?

Very easy. Took me about 20 minutes. The instruction are all in German but, the only thing you need to note is that you fit the spacers on the correct side which is fairly easy to work out from the instructions. The only slight problem I had was that where one off the side sections slotted onto the front part, some of the paint needed sanding down and lubing with some vaseline. There are some good instructions on the site someone did that recommends dry fitting the parts before fitting them to the bike, which is a good idea.
