Daily rate for tax exemption whilst working abroad.

Don't quite know the terminology but is there a daily rate I can add to my Self assessment whilst working away. I am working abroad for a long time and arranging my own accommodation rather than hotels. In exchange for friends putting me up I cook etc.

So is there a rate per day I can use to cover my expenses?

All gets very complicated.. but there is food allowances you can claim that do not need to be receipted...

You probably need to look at:

Or claim back on all the food purchased and say it is rent...

Hi Richie,

From my own experience it depends on whether you're a 'Sole Trader' or a 'Limited company'.There is a daily subsistence allowance which varies depending on the country/city you are working in,but from what my accountant tells me this is now only available to companies but was previously available to sole traders.

i'm sure there's guidelines / a sliding scale - but i'm sorry -dunno what would apply for your circumstances.
a good tax advisor could surely answer that in a second... but they'd probably charge you for it.
this is all i can come up with (apart from the ph. no. of my tax advisor! - who's very good)
