I have been waiting for Garmin to develop a solution to the problem I have had relating to the Nav 111 dropping its Bluetooth connection with the Airstream lid for a good while now.

I have had an email back form Garmin telling me they have now dealt with this and I can get a patch by downloading the web updater from their site.

Not done it yet but will do tonight and report if the patch is sucessful. This could mean that the Navigator 3 will work with another helmet other than the System 5 Bluetooth lid.

Just a general comment;
Almost all the BlueTooth issues are not with the Garmin GPS units

With each BlueTooth firmware upgrade Garmin is adding 'work arounds' for 'non-standard' BlueTooth implementations in other devices.

Did it work?

And the answer is.....................NO.

After wasting another hour of my life trying to get the two to pair up having done the download of the new soft/firmware, my verdict is the stability of the pairing is actually worse than it was before.

Prior to the upgrade, the nav would struggle to find the Airstream but would get there eventually. Once it found the device you would attempt to connect and it would cycle through three attempts to connect using auto codes for the first two attmepts, then a manual code for the last. It would then connect but would rapidly drop the connection in quick sucession.

With the upgrade, the nav is slower trying to find the Airstream, if it does it cycles through the connections before finally running out of time and dropping out.

Complete utter waste of time. I have emailed Garmin and told then but no response yet.

With the System 5 Bluetooth lid largely withdrawn and no alternative lid available to sync up with the Nav 3 its fair to say that its time Garmin and BMW stopped selling the benefits of Bluetooth with this product as it does not work.

For those of you with the 2820, congratulations. You paid a lot less than £1000 for the unit and got useable features that you can listen to via the jacks on the side. If the Nav 3 was not hard wired to my bike i would be demanding a full refund.

Thats bad news on the airstream as i have also been waiting for this update, I have already tried for a full refund on my Nav 3 & BMW are telling me this is not possible as the unit is working as it should & not faulty, they also tell me that there are non BMW alternatives that do work with the Nav 3 & i should investigate these further with the dealer i purchased it from, as i cannot use the functions i mainly purchased it for i would say that it is faulty :nenau

Well i reckon that garmin will get it to work unless they haven't already.

It may be a case that you have not connected it properly, hang in there and see what they have to say once they get back to you.

I am dleighted to be in a position to tell those interested that with the help of a very good guy at Garmin UK named Phil, I have sucessfully connected my Nokia phone to the Navigator 3 and then the Nav 3 to the Airstream lid.

Where before the connection was dropping in and out the connection is now perfectly stable and it would therefore apear that there is an alternative to the System 5 bluetooth lid.

Phil talked me through the process over the phone and the important points I want to convey to those trying this are as follows:

Ensure your Garmin/BMW software is totally up to date and that you have done the bluetooth firmware download.

When pairing the devices make sure you keep the button on the lid held down for the second pairing mode, its about 14 seconds not 10.

When the Nav asks for the pin code for the Airstream lid enter 1111 not 0000 as is published in the user manual - its a typo.

Not used the unit on the road yet but I am looking forward to it immensely.

Big thank you to Garmin, bigger thank you to Phil - I know he reads this site.
