Dakar bikes.. question from the un-knowing..

Righty please excuse my lack of knowledge here..

I dont know much about the Paris Daka and the motorcycle used and been trawling through u-tube and spotted a lot of bikes i just hadnt got a clue what they were, or were based upon. With the likes of the bmw, R80's etc the heritage of the bikes was easy to spot, and I know some of the modern bikes are based on 600 ktms or 650 bmw's, but what other road going bikes have formed the basis or been used for racers?

I was intruiged by some of the style changes in the bikes, the fairings etc and presumed this was down to aerodynamics and technological changes as bikes developed.

So apart from ktm's and bmw's.. do people enter any others?

the Dakar costs between 40-60K as a privateer that's alot a dosh...

Its nice to see what bikes have been used previously, as I guess only become interested in the dakar in the past few years.
Was hoping mind that there were some nice books out there, on the dakar and previous races and bikes etc.

I am just reading the account of a guy on adv rider with a ktm525 highly modified.. very well written and full of incidents..

I think i might see if i can do a trip down to watch part of it in 2008.

I remember watching video tapes of Paris - Dakar rallies (cars/bikes/trucks) from the early 80s - you might be able to google/amazon/ebay copies of them. Not sure if Geoff Duke or someone else made them

There are plenty of well illustrated books about.
I have one which was issued by the organisers to mark the 20th anniversary of the event (I think).
I don't have it to hand, but ISTR it's in both English and French
Try Googling "Dakar Rally" + book, Dakar Rallye, "Paris-Dakar Rallye + livre" etc
FWIW several brave souls have attempted the Dakar on 125s
One guy started on a heavily modified Harley Davidson (but didn't get far)
Jean-Claude Olivier came 10th overall on a FZ-750 based 4-cylinder monster while still recovering from two broken wrists, aged 40+. Respect.
