hi
my fairly recent purchase of a 650 dakar has got my head scatching. after changing the plugs the other day i found the bike wont start now. when the starter is pressed the soliniod clicks and all dash lights go out.
its not the battery as ive just put a new one on and its not the earth as ive checked that too . double checked all connections i touched but it still just clicks. any ideas?? im missing it:comfort

It has all the symptons of a dead battery.I'd check the voltage of the new battery as it's not unknown for new batteries to fail and make sure the battery connections are clean and tight, one of the most common causes of trouble on these bike is poor battery connections.

Dead battery or poor connection would be my suggestion.

I had the same thing happen to me and it was the battery connection :thumb

Thanks for your replies guys but Its definatly not the battery ,voltage is fine and put a charge through it too. after taking the terminals off ive recleaned them (they were ok just making sure) and put on a smear of vasoline.
Ive noticed that both the leads (pos + neg) to the relay are getting warm after five or six presses of the start button and i would nt think that right cant find anything in me haynes manuel to help identify problem ......any ideas what causes this to happen? the main earth to the engine is fine:confused:

If it won't start/turn over after you changed the plugs then you have a clue:augie

I've never had a twin plugged 650, are both plugs the same diameter but different lengths?.....in which case:blast

no theyre the same plugs .......so i happy to say no laughing yet....
the bike wont turnover the solinoid/relay thing by the battery just "clicks" when you press the starter. and both wires to it get warm after a few presses.

Then it sounds like you're causing a short by pressing the starter, I'd re check your wiring assuming your starter motors ok ...and assuming you fitted the correct plugs.

If i put the coil plug caps on the wrong plugs (pretty sure i didnt) could this cause a short ?? sorry if this seams a dumb Q but electrics confuse me easily:augie

That wouldn't cause a short, that much is definate!!!

I'd check all the wiring near the plug leads though. Have you suck it in gear and rolled it back n to a bit. Could be a sticky starter motor??

Check the connections on the back of the starter motor too as if they are loose or corroded, it may cause the lack of a decent earth. Starter motors usually click when you don't get a solid earth connection.

ok thanks i thought that coils wouldnt do that (honest). yes i have rolled it back in gear to check starter. ill check the starter earth tomorow . cheers flip:thumb

for those interested turns out to be a faulty starter motor and solinoid. both are being replaced by cannons under the warrenty. its 2 years old 0n 6/11/09 so im glad its happened now. i did wonder weather the warrenty would be valid but cannons didnt quible even though the bike does not have bmw service history(just specialist dealer) and 30k on it. so good for them ive read some bad things on here about them.
anyone else had startermotor and solinoid fail??
